Room Blocks; How do they work?

Tera, on January 3, 2020 at 9:42 PM Posted in Planning 0 5
I am a bit confused as to how room blocks work. When requesting a room block at a hotel:

1. Would I choose the specific dates my guests can book; such as if my wedding is May 16. Would I block May 15-17 specifically for my guests to book.
2. Or is it they have a certain time frame to book the dates they wish at the hotel?
Thank you in advance.

The block is specific to your date, although the hotel we had didn't have an issue with people staying extra nights using the block discount.

You have to reserve rooms for specific dates. If you want say 15 rooms the first night and 20 the second night, that's also sometimes possible. The places where I live almost always require a two-night minimum for wedding blocks, I'm not sure why. So I have booked 10 rooms for two nights, and then if those fill up I'm allowed to expand the block as long as the hotel has rooms available. What the block does is basically just lock in a rate for guests, usually cheaper than the standard rate.

Typically you ask for the weekend of the wedding. Ex is for a Saturday wedding:

    Friday Check In

    Sunday Check Out

When booking your block, you can ask for flex dates/rates. I asked for (2) days before (so the Wednesday, Thursday) and 2 days after (Monday, Tuesday) because my whole side of the family is out of state.

The hotel will block a certain number of rooms for the dates you think they would arrive and depart. When talking to them ask about dates they hold before releasing -you can still book but don’t have first dibs any more. Don’t forget to book yours too if staying at same hotel. I booked a suite for us. You also need to think 1 or 2 beds for families. I asked about breakfast because it’s Mother’s Day next day and didn’t want to worry about brunch for out of towers. Also if so many book, we get free shuttle to/from venue.

#1. They block specific dates for your wedding. My FH and I are getting married on leap day, February 29th. We did our room blocks for February 28th - March 1st.
