Room blocks: Can you have more than one?

MrsBest2B, on February 5, 2016 at 4:17 PM Posted in Planning 0 22

At first I couldn't find any, now I have 2-3 I'd like to offer my guests. Is this normal if I only do 10ish rooms at three different locations? I'm not expecting a lot of my guests to stay over so I'm not too worried that there won't be enough.

I think that would be fine. That way they have the option of choosing which hotel and price (I'm assuming they have different prices) they want.

We have two, and reserved around 10 rooms at each place. We have both family and fresh-out-of-college friends coming, so we had one hotel that was nicer and one that was cheaper.

There's nothing wrong with reserving 2 or 3! Are you staying at the hotel? I would reserve a little more at that hotel if you are!

I have 2, they're at slightly different price points but I wanted to give options, especially with different brands (Marriott/Hilton). Plus I couldn't accommodate all my guests under 1 block as I need about 30 rooms.

I also have 2, was thinking about just doing 1 instead.

We have two. One is at a B&B where we are staying and the other is a cheaper hotel with more bed options. Both are 5 minutes from the wedding.

Totally, I have three! Especially if they're all comp blocks with no attrition, you might as well. People like options and some people have loyalty cards!

You can! But be careful of attrition clauses. (If you don't pick up a certain percent you have to pay for them)

I'm a little confused about the room blocking process in general lolz. Do you pay for the rooms to block them? A down payment or anything? And you just call and say "I'd like to block these many rooms please"?

I have room blocks at 3 hotels (10 rooms each). I did it just in case and to give pricing options but I don't expect many rooms to be booked by my guests.

@Nicole - I just called groups sales at each hotel and set up the block for free. Most hotels don't charge a fee but to be sure I did ask and looked for it in each contract that I signed. The hotel will set aside the rooms and guarantee the rate only requesting that guests book by a specified date. After this specified date the rooms are released. This date is usually within one month of the event date.

I would say 2-3 is fine just make sure they are different price points.

Absolutely! I think its ok to have several at several price points, or if you have a lot of people traveling one hotel may not be able to accommodate all of your guests.

@Nicole, each hotel blocks differently. I found 2 hotels that would let me reserve my rooms under a group name until some number of days before the wedding (our two hotels reserve until 45 and 20 days before). Then I gave the hotel names and group names to my guests, and they can contact the hotel to book at my discounted block rate. Then once that deadline comes, they release any unbooked rooms for the general public to book. Some hotels make you pay a percentage of unbooked rooms, some do not. Both of the hotels I blocked do not hold me financially liable for unbooked rooms.

I would have had multiple (also assuming no financial liability), but my first four choices were unable to accommodate due to lack of availability. The one I do have's rates are not awesome (basically the same as the current online booking site rate), but I have it just in case for people who book on the later side (but still outside of one month) if that rate happens to become more competitive.

We were going to do 2 but we got a great price at one so we went with just the one. Plus it will include a shuttle service to and from the venue when we fill 15 rooms and since most of our guests are from out of town we should hit that no problem.

How soon should rooms be blocked? We have guest asking already and formal wedding invitations haven't went out yet. Our wedding is Oct. 29. Thank you ladies for such good advice.
