Room Blocking Help!

Lindsay, on January 1, 2022 at 9:43 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 2 6

All of the hotels in the area in which I am getting married require 80% of booking otherwise we are financially responsible for the rooms that have not been booked. With that being said, this could leave us with a hefty bill. We are considering not even bothering with a room block, but are worried that it would come off inconsiderate. Since there are plenty of hotels in the area, we are worried that our guests will go with a cheaper alternative if they believe the blocked room prices are still too high. (Guest count: 150)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I personally do not think blocked rooms are worth the stress. It is considerate to put on your website hotels that are close to your venue, but most guests have their own discounted programs (AAA, or other frequented hotel progtams).

You need to ask about courtesy blocks. If they don’t offer them, move down the list till you find one or more that does. A courtesy block sets a number of rooms aside but you are not financially responsible for filling them, nor should you be anyway. However, make sure that the discount you are receiving for the block is cheaper than the normal rate, because not all are and some guests are able to find lodging elsewhere for less money. For most couples, they are not worth the energy or stress because there often are not discounts for blocks and guests will decide where they choose to stay within their budget.

I agree with Michelle. I just did a room block for our Memorial Day weekend and the rate wasn’t any different than when one of the girls booked on their site prior to me finalizing the room block. The one we chose we had to ask about a fall off date otherwise they were trying to charge us for remaining rooms. As where another location volunteered that option upfront. Unless your in a small area with only a handful of options , just use your wedding website to direct people in a certain location close to venue. Ours is in a beach area on holiday weekend so we decided a block was best.

Nah, you don’t need a room block, as long as there are a few alternates available.

We didn't do room blocks because none of the hotels near us (that we were willing to recommend) offered courtesy blocks. Plus, the prices weren't any better than if guests just booked on their own. We just put a list of recommended hotels on our website. People figured it out (and 99% of our guests had to travel, so it's not like it was one or two people).

I have a room block and I will be honest I didnt check the price of the rooms without the block to see if there was a discount BUT I did luck out because I had contacted the hotel last March when I got engaged for our wedding in September of 2022 and got all the information but wasnt allowed to officially block rooms until July and because I had everything in writing including room pricing even though the price of the rooms has gone up since I initially talked to them they are honoring the price I was quoted.
