Room Block Mistake

Kind of freaking out, we severely underestimated the amount of rooms we would need. We kind of assumed a lot of our friends would want to split rooms and we were very wrong. Somehow we don't even have enough rooms for the entire bridal party the night before. We were nervous to have too many extra rooms because we have to pay for whatever rooms don't get used but now I'm freaking out that people won't have a place to stay. The girl at the hotel told us extra rooms are extremely hard to get when we originally booked the room block so I'm not sure I'll be able to get more. Hopefully I can get blocks at another hotel close by. So just a piece of advice (or maybe it is common sense and I'm just a dumb dumb) don't assume all your friends will want to split rooms.

@Audrey last year on the same weekend there were 6 couples using this hotel for their wedding and it was sold out. I can't confirm that they were sold out (this is based on what the girl told us), but the 6 weddings was true we saw the signs directing people to the transportation to the venues.

@Sarah honestly I have no idea. Didn't really think of that but I guess somehow they know.

This is why we didn't do hotel block. No one from out of town expected us too. They said they would find their own accommodations.

Try not to freak out until you talk to the hotel! It's far enough out, so hopefully you will be able to add more rooms for your guests. Otherwise, it's not a big deal to make a separate block at a different hotel, as long as it's nearby. Good luck!

I saw hotels that had that policy, that unpaid rooms were our responsibility. I just didn't sign contracts with them, but there were also plenty of nearby hotels that didn't have that policy so I had a good selection to go from.

Hopefully they can add rooms, but if not then you have a good plan going for a different hotel. I'm sure it'll work out fine!

So I work in the hospitality industry, and what they are having you do is an attrition clause. Most of them are 80/20, like what you said yours is. Most hotels that I know of only do those for large events or corporate groups. I wouldn't add extra rooms at that hotel if I were you. I'd look for somewhere else that won't hold you financially responsible at all.

I feel your pain, everyone was bugging me about our hotel block and the day I signed the contract I let everyone know they could start booking rooms. Little did I know that when the hotel said they had ten rooms for me and that I could add on as needed, that meant the hotel had ten rooms left for the nights I was planning on using. So like a half hour later I started getting calls from my family being like, "The hotel is sold out!". Even my own mother is having to switch rooms twice during her three night stay.

I freaked out a lot about it at the time, but looking back I can see that it was not as big of a deal as I was making it out to be. And you know what? At the end of the day, these are adults who are capable of figuring out their own accommodations by themselves. And hotel rooms getting booked is one of those things that's so far out of our control that there is no point in worrying about it. Hope everything works out for the best with your hotel, though -- that was by far the most stressful wedding related thing that I've had to deal with as yet.

Thanks @Audrey, I have to book at another hotel. But it's close by and they are way nicer. I kind of wish I went with them first.
