Roles for Brothers besides groomsman

Ashley, on March 28, 2017 at 3:56 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

Hi! I have a dilemma because I have four siblings and my FH is the only child. I would love to have all of my siblings in our wedding party, but I want my FH to be able to have his best friends (who are like brothers to him) as his groomsman and I don't want a huge number of bridesmaids/groomsman. My youngest sister and brother will be Jr. bridesmaid and ring bearer.

What are some roles to include siblings in the ceremony? I don't want them to be ushers, but a role equally as significant as a groomsman for 2 of my older brothers.

    There's nothing "equally as significant."

Can you have them do a reading at the wedding? That's probably the only other "special" role.

I was originally going to recommend ushers, but see you don't want that. I would recommend readers or having them escort for your grandmother/mother during the processional.

Well there aren't just other roles we can make up for you. Usher may have to suffice.

Usher or a reading...or have them stand on your side.

Have uneven sides. Or have your brothers on your side.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't think we will have any readings during our ceremony. I am VERY open to a creative/non-traditional role that has some sort of significance. Even if it is a "made up" role, that's okay with me. Would it be weird to have them walk down the aisle and light the candles at the alter (the candles we would use to light our unity candle)? Does that seem like a special role??

My brother is going to be an usher and also walk the Eucharist up to the altar, but it doesn't look like either of these will work for you

Fall Bride is spot on. Anything "alternative" is always going to be a step down from being part of the bridal party. If you're open to non-traditional, what about the suggestions to have them on your side or have uneven sides?

I didn't see anything wrong with the lighting of the candle suggestion. I've seen it. Talk about it with your brothers and see what they think. I'm considering the same dilemma. My FH is the only child and I'm the youngest of 4 (one brother in our mix). We're having a small wedding party also. Have you considered having your brothers, somehow, give you away along with your father? Perhaps they walk you down the aisle 1/2 way and hand you to your father, who takes you to your FH? Idk, just throwing something out there a little less orthodox.

Thanks, Tammy! I actually really like the idea of having my brothers walk me half way down the aisle to my dad. I have a super blended family, so a lot of things will be unorthodox and I'm totally fine with it!

Suggestions for an older brother, who will be very hurt not being in the wedding party, the younger sibling and best friends from high school are in the wedding party. The older brother is 8 years old thus he was not present and out of the home when the middle son and younger son bonded more. The older brother already feels out of the loop and has some PtSD issues related to service, so any suggestion how to include him that he has a significant role. Not sure usher will fit him. Love some ideas that can help with this situation and the family dynamics. Thoughts
