Road trip

Jazmin, on September 6, 2019 at 2:56 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 5

Me and my fiancé just had 6 years together. We want to do a road trip little mini vacation for 5 days. We were planning going to San Francisco but I feel it will be to expensive to go out there. Do you guys know anywhere in California affordable places to go for a mini vacation?

So much depends on the time of year, where you're coming from, and what you consider "inexpensive." Unfortunately, California is pretty much the poster child for expensive everything.... (I'm a native.) If you're looking at coming in the fall or perhaps early spring, in some locations those will be a bit "off season," so possibly less expensive. My favorite place in the entire state is Mammoth (eastern Sierra Nevadas). If you'd be traveling early enough in the fall to be ahead of possible snow, you can get some good deals (relatively speaking) on off-season accommodations then. There are tons of opportunities for hiking, fishing, beautiful sightseeing opportunities, and enjoying the resorts when it's both less crowded and less expensive. Another favorite is the San Diego area. Again, never inexpensive, but you might be able to find fall off-season discounts. There's tons to do ranging from typical beach activities to the Balboa Park museums, the San Diego Zoo and/or Safari Park, wineries, etc. Options in SD are very spread out geographically, so you'll need to plan what you want to spend time on and then book accommodations accordingly. One other consideration might be the Cayucos/Paso Robles areas (central coast between San Luis Obispo and Monterey). You can do both a small beach town and wineries, and maybe a visit to Hearst Castle in that area. Big cities like San Francisco, LA, and resort towns like Santa Barbara or Monterey are pretty much always high-season and expensive. Good luck!

I'm also a CA native, and have to agree with MOB SoCal. It's not cheap, to live or to visit. But there are deals to be had.

In Northern CA, there is the Napa area, and when it's not summertime, lots of prices go down.

If you are interested in some of the activities in/near San Francisco, but find accommodations to pricey, you might consider one of the nearby towns in the Bay Area for lodging, and just do day trips to the tourist spots. Like, find a hotel or rental in the East Bay (Hayward, Castro Valley, Oakland) or the Tri Valley (Livermore, Pleasanton, Dublin), and just rent a car to drive to SF for the day, or take BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) to the city. Also, in the Santa Cruz area, there are lots of little towns that nobody outside the area has ever heard of. But they are a lot more affordable for hotels, restaurants, entertainment. Check out places like Watsonville, Aptos, Soquel for less expensive options. The nice thing is that they are very close to the action of Santa Cruz, without the massive cost. In fact, if you are into camping, there's a great KOA Kampground in Watsonville. They have tent camping, RV spots, and cabins for rent, and they are just minutes away from some of the most beautiful beach in the state. But if camping isn't your thing, there are plenty of hotels and vacation rentals in the area.

I could go on and on about spots in Northern CA. I hope you're able to visit, as it's such a beautiful, fun place!!

Ok, that's cool. Modesto is not that far from the Bay Area, and with a car, you can pretty much go anywhere! That sounds like so much fun!! I love California, and I hope you really enjoy your visit!!
