River cruise or not?

Tori, on January 19, 2016 at 10:55 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 10

My FH and I are wanting to go to Europe for our honeymoon. I have recently discovered Viking River Cruises. We have been looking to go to Santorini Greece, but I'm a goer. We were thinking of taking about 10-12 days off for our trip. I don't like sitting around all day doing nothing so I would rather go to a few places in that time frame. Has anyone had an experience with an European River Cruise? If you were going somewhere for 10/12 days where would you go?

I have also been thinking about Viking, but one thing we both will have to keep in mind is the fact at this cruise kind of caters to the 50+ crowds. I started reading personal reviews, all of which seem to highlight that point. Now there is nothing wrong with this, but its not for everyone, because you are with these people every day and with your group for every trip. Just something to keep in mind if your the youngest couple on the boat.

I'd love to go on one of those cruises! But like TaMorey says, they might be catered towards an older crowd. I do highly recommend Norwegian Cruise Line, though. They'd most likely have younger people. I've went on one of their cruises to Bermuda and absolutely loved it. FH and I are going one of their cruises to the Bahamas for the honeymoon. They travel all over the world, though. Here is their list of European cruises:

I want to do one of these SO bad. Ideally for our first anniversary, but DH wants to wait another year. I want to do the one that goes from Paris to Prague. I do agree with TaMorey though that it's definitely catered to an older crowd. I don't think that would bother us much though.

My parents did one of those. They loved it but they're in their 40s. It sounded like when you're on the boat there's not a ton to do that would appeal to a younger crowd. Princess cruises does Mediterranean cruises. I did one that went from Barcelona to Venice, and it did hit Santorini. I'm not sure when in the year they start doing them, but you might take a look at that. River cruises also appear more expensive (but only because everything is included, including excursions, whereas in princess you have to pay for excursions. But if you don't want to do an excursion and want to explore on your own then that's an option)

I absolutely want to do a river cruise one day but I agree they are geared to an olderror crowd. I have done the Mediterranean Norwegian cruise and it was an awesome way to see a lot of great ports and do amazing day trips there was definitely no laying around. We departed from Barcelona we stopped in Naples and went to the almalfi we went to Rome Pisa Luca mallorca and Marseille then back to Barcelona were we found a cheap flight to Paris then took the train to London to fly home it was awesome we were gone 3 weeks. Definitely look into Norwegian they have tones of routes in Europe. It's nice way to travel without having to check in and out of hotels.

Last summer we went on a cruise to Cozumel, Belize, Roatan and I loved it. My FH wasn't a fan. I like the thought of a river cruise because you get to stay a day or 2 at the port, it gives us more time. Now that I'm thinking about it, we might as well just go to a couple places for a few days.

Along the same lines as the previous comments... my parents are in their early 60s and they said they were YOUNG compared to a lot of the crowd on their viking ship.

If you said you were interested in Santorini and wanted more time in each port... have you thought about a small ship cruise of the Greek Islands? Personally I am obsessed with the idea of doing one of the trips on Star Clippers. The boats are much smaller (less than 200 people) and since they are traveling shorter distances they have more time in each port.

Edited to add: Plus the boats just look so cool!

Echoing PPs - from what I've heard these cruises cater to an older populace. My FILs were invited to go on one this fall and declined because they felt like they were too young. They are in their late 50's.
