Rings?

Renee, on August 13, 2020 at 1:46 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 9
My fiancé and I are planning to have a civil ceremony between us and our parents this year and plan a big wedding next year where we invite all of our family and friends! We don’t plan to tell anyone we are getting married this year. We are not sure how to handle the ring situation though. Do we buy each other wedding bands for the civil ceremony this year and take them off on the wedding day next year to exchange them again?

If you're not telling anyone that you're getting married this year, you probably wouldn't want to be wearing wedding rings all year lol, that may give it away. Maybe just exchange them during your ceremony for tradition's sake and then store them away until your "wedding" next year.

I absolutely agree with the pp, if you're keeping this secret for a year, I'd skip the wedding bands all together.

You could buy something "simple" and wear them on your right hands if you need to feel something symbolic. My FH currently wears a wedding band on his right hand to show he's "taken"

We still bought our rings for our minimony and plan to just exchange them again next year, but if you are trying to hide the fact that you got married for a year, then you would have to take your rings off any time you see someone. If that is going to be a hassle, it might be best to wait to buy the fancy rings and maybe exchange cheaper rings at the civil ceremony?

We're not keeping our marriage a secret, but for COVID related reasons we just bought silicone bands this year and we'll get real ones next year/eventually. You could do this so you have rings to exchange and then either keep them as souvenirs that you don't wear, or as Margaret said, you could wear them on your right hands. Mine looks like a real metal ring, but his doesn't, so you could definitely get some that are less traditional looking and not get a lot of questions about them. Also, they're not much of an investment. Ours were like $40 each and most of the options were even less expensive.

Just as a matter of curiosity - why are you keeping it a secret for a year?

I would just buy temporary rings too in the time being and for your ceremony next time, buy the real ones
