Ring Re-sizing at Kays

Samantha, on May 29, 2015 at 9:07 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17

So, I am thinking about getting my engagement ring re-sized at Kay Jewelers because that's where FH got my ring. I want to get it sized up to the next half size (5 to a 5.5), but I am super nervous. 1) I have never gone a day without my ring on my hand in 2 years and I don't know how long it will take, and 2) I have this silly thought that once I get it back it will break or something (lol).

For anyone who got their ring re-sized, how long did it take for them to re-size it, and is Kay reliable? I have heard some people say that Kay Jewelers is not that reliable with this sort of thing and I don't want to be disappointed.

Oh, and I like the box when making a post that says "I'm not a robot". : P

I had to get mine resized after FH proposed...it was ready the next day. But rather than take it down a half size, the took it down a full size and had to fix it...that took 2-3 more days because the person that resized them was only there Tuesday and Thursday.

I have had non-wedding rings re-sized at Kay's. It always takes 2 weeks. If you got your ring from Jared's, they can do it in one to two days. I've never had an issue with any of the rings I have bought from Kay's and I have bought 3. They don't call you when it arrives, though. They say they will, but they never do. And when you call and ask if it is ready, they give you an annoyed tone like you were supposed to know and you're bothering them. I've had that experience at 3 different Kay's locations, so I know it's not just the employee.

So no, you shouldn't be worried. It will take about 2 weeks and it won't break!

I went to Helzberg and it took about 2 weeks to size down, maybe slightly less since they send it out. I think Kay does as well.

I can't speak to Kay's quality of work as there commercials are so obnoxious I don't want to go in there (Hey, Dr. Quinn, if your heart is open you're experiencing a medical emergency), but I've heard the same as you.

I lost a pave stone after having my ring resized and Helzberg replaced it and tightened all the settings and haven't had issues since. My ring was not from Helzberg, I just have had good experiences with their work.

Is your ring just recently feeling too small? With summer here, your fingers will swell. If you size up you may find it too big in the winter. But if it just doesn't fit and never has, sizing up might be good!

I had mine resized there and it took 2 weeks. I just wore my promise ring during the time.

I'm wondering the same thing because now that I have my wedding band and engagement ring, I think I need to go up half a size and possibly get them soldered together. However, I had a bad experience with Kay's last fall when I took my ring to get inspected (as I have to every 6 months for the lifetime warranty). They said I had a loose stone and sent the ring off. When I got it back it looked horrible as they had ruined the milgrain design along the edge of the band. They sent it off again, I picked it up and it was even worse looking with a big black mark on the side. Even DH could see the problem, and he is certainly not that interested in rings. After several visits to Kay's and calls with their customer service department I ended up getting a new ring (they said the old one was beyond repair and no longer carried that style, so I had to get something completely different). So obviously I'm a little leery of letting them have my ring again. Although at least this one they still carry if anything goes wrong, and I guess now we know that the customer service team will do what they can to make it right.

I just went in to have a non-wedding ring resized and they said it would take two weeks. Seemed to be the same answer I got at other stores, too.

I had my ring resized from 5.5 to 5.75 once we got the wedding band ordered (and ordered the wedding band in 5.75). Our jeweler is not as big time as Kay - so it took three weeks. But had no issues, other than feeling naked without my ring!

All of my jewelry is from Kay. I've never had an issue with sending anything out to be fixed. I had a bracelet that broke and they fixed it for me. I had my engagement ring resized and it was back within 2 weeks. And anytime you get it sized it also gets dipped so it'll look nice and pretty :-)

My e-ring and band are from Kay. Oh and FH's band too. When our bands came in, they were resized in a week or 2. We have full protection plans on all 3 though, so pretty much everything is covered. The peace of mind is nice.

JCC good to know they re-dip it! I was thinking about having mine adjusted before the wedding and I'm definitely going to if they re-dip it as well.

Didn't someone just post yesterday that when Kay's was resizing her ring, they lost it and had to give her a new one?

A local jeweler made my ring and he's the only one I trust with my ring. Stephanie is right though, your finger swells in the heat and your ring may feel tight.

@Stephanie, my friends and I call Dr. Quinn's necklace the T&A necklace, aka the boobs and butt necklace. A friend once pointed out thats what it looked like and thats all I can see now. Smiley winking

I dropped mine off at Helzburg yesterday for replating and soldering. It takes 7-10 days to get them back.

@Elyse, there have been a few Kay's horror stories on here since I started lurking a year ago.

My friend has had terrible experiences with them (same store as me) with her stone falling out more than once...but I think it's just the setting that she got. As I've said, no issues and I have 3 rings including e-ring, a bracelet, a watch, 2 pair of earrings and a necklace from there.

@Tania, exactly. My ring has pave stones down the sides and my jeweler refused to resize my ring. He says it ruins the structural integrity of the ring. Instead, he installed a permanent ring guard. For those with fancy design work or pave stones I'd inquire about one. Mine is a hunk of white gild soldered inside the ring in a u shape to make it fit.

I've had rings re-sized at Kay's before... the only thing i didn't like was that they stretch the gold that was already on the ring (making the band itself thinner) instead of adding additional gold to the ring... Helzberg re-sized my engagement ring & wedding band, and did a great job.
