Ring Issues

Megan, on January 19, 2019 at 9:07 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 6
Ladies I am so upset over this and I don’t know what to do!

Backstory: FH and I were previously engaged in 2010. Fast forward to today, when he proposed, he used my original Verragio setting from Jeweler #1 and upgraded the center diamond from Jeweler #2. The reason he went to different jeweler for the center diamond upgrade was because he first went to Jeweler #1 and he felt they were trying to be deceitful about the value of the original diamond and the quality of it (I had the paperwork for it but he did not ask me for it bc he was trying to be secretive in getting the new diamond)

fast forward to last evening and I was at Jeweler #1 to pick out wedding bands. I ask for my engagement ring to be cleaned. They come back and tell me that one the diamonds is loose and that the entire ring is slightly bent! It can be fixed but for X dollars. The money amount was minor but it irked me that FH spent a good chunk of change on my diamond upgrade with them, we plan to buy the bands with them and they aren’t going to go take care of the engagement ring? I said what happens if I sauder them together? I’m not going to go to 2 jewelers for my ring set. So then he tells me he is going to inspect the ring to see if they will warranty it...comes back and tells me nope they won’t because of the condition it is in...lots of porosity on the metal, aka pitting. He says it’s from a bad cast when the ring was originally poured. That doesn’t occur over time (my question bc the setting is 9 years old) and it doesn’t happen from the ring being sized. He told me to contact Jeweler #2 from where it was purchased and that he basically feels they should replace my setting!

So I contact Jeweler #2 and I’m told that because another unauthorized Verragio Jeweler altered my ring (put a new head and center diamond, sized my ring) that it voided my lifetime warranty! He wasn’t unwilling to help me but said that Jeweler #1 technically took responsibility for the ring when they put the upgraded diamond in it and that they should have know a Verragio ring would carry a lifetime warranty only through an authorized dealer so should have brought it to FH attention them setting it could possibly void the warranty. Also, in the 5x they’ve had my ring to mount the new diamond, size it, and had it under a microscope to inspect it before cleaning, as well as take measurements for a custom wedding band, Jeweler #1 never once said anything about the “condition” of the ring!

So now the options I’m left with are pick out wedding band(s) for my 9 year old setting that doesn’t have a warranty through any jeweler (we do have insurance on it through our homeowners insurance) or pick out a new setting and wedding band, which could be a good chunk of unexpected expense! i don’t know what to do. I absolutely love my setting and it is s sentimental to me, but it is 9 years old so now with these issues being brought to my attention, I’m hesitant to pick brand new bands to pair with it. What would you do?

At this point, stop looking at it as an investment, where anything less than top quality is distressing, and start looking at it as something with such sentimental value that he held onto the old setting, and put in a new stone. I would guess that more than 3/4 of the people I know with high quality gold ring settings, replace them within 10-15 years, if they wear them constantly, and less if they wear them while working with things, washing with abrasive hand soaps, etc. Gold is soft, and after a while the underneath band becomes so thin it is like a cutting wire. And prongs loosen over time, and must be adjusted. So plan on getting a new gold setting in 5 years or so, and love your ring for the love between the two of you that it represents now. Unless you carry around a jewelers loupe or a magnifier, no one will ever know their are pits in the metal, but you. Buy bands you like. I have never heard of a company that will not void your warranty on the metal band if it is soldered to any other thing. As soon as you add a spot of high heat to flux and a different metal, melting it between the bands, you damage that spot on both rings forever. Why should they warranty a product that you have deliberately" damaged" from the original, not for a repair to improve a defect, but to keep two rings together simply as a convenience? And most original warranties are not transferable once touched by any repair or modification work by any person not considers an authorized repair person by the company? That is true of every piece of electronics I have ever own, every car, high quality bicycle, even pricey back packs for mountain hiking. Clothing manufacturers or shops will not take a return if one button or 2inch dart or hem has been altered. So you really are expecting something that would be nice, but is not at all a likely or standard warranty feature, and any business by law has the right to withdraw all warranty and guarantee provisions when worked on by anyone else. We would all like perfect, and all thing any expensive thing should come with long term transferable guarantees, me included. But in the real world, this does mot happen. Be happy you stuck it out or came back to each other, and the slightly damaged but still functional band is a symbol of that. 😊❤

Go to Shane Co. They are amazing! Best customer service hands down. Bonus points, because my husband laughs that I can always pick out ShaneCo rings, but honestly it’s easy because they are the sparkliest! I haven’t been wrong yet!

I agree 100% with Judith. If the setting is loose, you should probably fix it. If you want a perfect new ring that's covered under warranty then get a new one and read their Warranty and don't ever take it to an unapproved vendor.
It's OK if the band and engagement ring come from 2 different places.

I would still explore what can be done with your current ring to help repair it and not quite go to worst case scenario of getting a whole new set unless you have to. I love Verragio rings they’re very unique!

I go to two different jewelers - it's not a huge hassle. It sounds like the jeweler for the band is just being difficult. And you haven't confirmed his issues. Your original jeweler is still willing to help you - maybe he'd offer a new warranty on it after the repairs are made.

Either way, I'd stick with the ring and legacy that you have together.

Settings that have gold in them , that band often needs replacing in about 15 years of everyday wear, Because the metal is soft, and may get wire thin and hurtful over time. Replace any prongs that hold pie es together, and wait 5-10 years til you have had some wear for your money from that band. As for warranty, consumer rights are minimal. Bottom line is, old or new, the customer bears responsibility for inspecting the goods , and any pitting from a bad pour into the original mold would only ever have been good to notice before the first sàle.
