Ring giving me black line

K, on January 31, 2020 at 12:36 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 7

My engagement ring is 14K white gold...I've had it a little over a year but recently it's been leaving a black line where the ring sits on my finger. Has anyone else had this problem? It isn't itchy or bumpy--just black. I thought it might be a bruise, but it goes away immediately when I'm not wearing the ring. My jewelry person said that it could be the rhodium plating wearing off....seems odd that it would do that in just a year though.

I'd go see a dermatologist to see what they say.

Smart...that might be the way to go. I have a dermatologist that I see regularly and can email with. I'll ask him.

Hey, I use to work in a jewelry store and we saw this often. It almost definitely is the plating rubbing off. Depending on how "hard" you wear it having it re-plated once a year or so is pretty normal. 2 years is the max for gold on rhodium.

This is good to know! I was going to suggest maybe it was the cleaning solution she was using, as mine gives me a little black ring right after if I don't rinse it well enough, but this makes a lot of sense, too. Mine isn't rhodium plated though so I'm not gonna worry about it for now.

Can you get gold not rhodium plated?

White gold, I believe, is almost always rhodium plated. It helps give it that white gold color and shine.

My ring is sterling silver and hasn't been plated in anything so it tarnishes. I clean it once every week or two.

My white gold ring isn't rhodium played. It's a warmer color (whereas the plating really gives the white gold a cooler hue, like platinum). Here's a picture Ring giving me black line 1
