Ring Dilemna

Rebecca, on August 6, 2019 at 4:20 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8
I posted yesterday about having a missing stone in my ring. I emailed the online jeweler my fiancé got it from and they’ll replace it “for free” and we only have to pay for the stone-a whopping $75 for a tiny aquamarine and shipping.

I am one to do my research so I took it to three different jewelers today to get another opinion. Basically, all three were surprised it’s only a month old and worn very carefully. The one who spent the longest with me explained that the prongs are totally wrong for these stones, showed me how another is loose, and when we looked at it under the magnifier, the gold is pitted and unpolished in places. The aquamarines they used were such bad quality they didn’t even know how to rate them. The center stone is off center and basically, the quality sucks. All three stores quoted me at least $500 to fix it, possibly more depending on what happens as they start working on it. My FH and I will be calling the company he purchased it from and arguing for a refund but we’re just over the 30 day mark (36 days..) so I doubt they’ll want to do anything.

Now I’m so torn. If they don’t do anything about it (highly doubting it), would you just get a new setting? Try to fix this one even though the way it’s constructed, the side stones will constantly fall out?

I would buy an entirely new setting from a reputable company and not a private seller. It may be a cost originally but there are always places offering financing but I will guarantee that it will save you time, money and frustration in the long run. You won't have sub-par craftsmanship and they also usually offer a lifetime warranty for the setting.

I agree with PP I would get a whole new setting from a different jeweler.

This. It's not a special occasion ring. It's a every day of your life ring. You want it as sturdy as possible

I would probably cut my losses and get an entirely new setting, as pp have suggested. This ring is supposed to last you the rest of your life and by the sounds of it, you will be spending the rest of your life fixing it.

Maybe your FH (if he bought the ring using a credit card) could contact his credit card company about disputing the charges or any warranty protection through them. That might help get some of your money back to either fix your ring or buy a new one.

I would get a new setting. I had a friend whose corner stones were set incorrectly. The prongs were too short and essentially they would always become lose. Her jeweler fixed the existing setting by removing and replacing the prongs. My jeweler explained the settings well before my fiance finalized the design of my ring. It’s important to use someone with a lot of knowledge on the subject.

I'm so sorry this is happening to you! As PP said, getting a new setting is probably the best you can do in this situation
