Ring adjustment period?

Jennifer, on January 8, 2022 at 9:53 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 17
Hey girls, finally got my ring and it’s gorgeous! But it’s also driving me a bit crazy. The jeweler says it’s the right size since I have small knuckles, but when I get too warm it leaves an indent on my finger and feels pretty tight. Sometimes I forget it’s on, but I spend a lot of time being able to feel it and it sometimes causes my left hand to feel achy or itchy (I’m not having an allergic reaction since I’ve been wearing it for days with no rash - I think it’s just irritated). Did anyone else have an adjustment period where their ring sorta hurt to wear or is this thing too small?

I had an adjustment. With mine, but it was more having to adjust to just having some thing on my finger. It never felt attacked or itchy, and it certainly never left an indent on my finger! It sounds to me like it’s too tight. Can you easily spin the ring around while wearing it?

I had an adjustment period in which I was very aware of my e-ring and spent a lot of time paying attention to it being there, but I got used to it (and then got used to my wedding band) - now if I'm not wearing at least my wedding band, or if I'm wearing one of my silicone rings, it feels *weird.*

As far as your ring leaving an indent when your fingers are swollen, I wouldn't resize for that unless it's really uncomfortable and cutting into the finger. What the jeweler is trying to do (I think) is to make sure your ring won't slip off easily when your hands *aren't* swollen, so it means that when they are it's a little snug. I have the same situation - when my hands are swollen (or I have a little extra weight) my rings leave indents in my finger.

When I’m warm it spins but not super easily, when I’m cold it spins easier but not on its own. Hmmm…I might see if I can get it brought up 1/4 size.

I think so too, so I can’t tell if I’m just being sensitive or whether it’s a touch small. How long did it take you to adjust to wearing your ring?

If I were in your position, I would probably get it sized up a bit too. Especially with it being the cold months now. Come summertime, your fingers are going to swell even more. Mine is quite loose in the winter, so I put one of those tiny spiral sizers on it during these few months. Then the ring fits perfectly during the spring and fall, and is a bit tight (but not horribly uncomfortably so) in the warm summer months.

It probably took a month or so - perhaps a little less (it's been five years now, so it's a little hard to be sure about specific timing) but not longer for sure. I was definitely hyperaware of it (and spent a *lot* of time messing with it), depending on how long you've had it (and where you live, since it may be hot/humid where you are), I would give it a little while before I had it adjusted, just so you know it's not just having it on that's giving you this feeling.

The other thing I would do, if you're planning to wear a wedding band and not just the e-ring (whether you have your wedding band yet or not) is put on another ring between your e-ring and your hand, so you see how it will fit once you've added the band to the mix (obviously on a "home" day, so you don't get asked ridiculous questions)

Yeah, I’m a bit worried about it. Especially since I’ve heard that it feels tighter once you add a wedding band. I might go back to the jeweler and see if 1/4 size would make a difference.

You could always go in and try on multiple sizes with their ring sizer. Make sure you practice putting the different sizes on and off several times, and wearing each size for a few minutes to see if it gets tight or if it feels uncomfortable. I would try moving your hands around a lot while wearing each size also. That’s what I did with mine when choosing the size of my ring. The jeweler kept trying to convince me to get a smaller size, but I’m glad I held my ground and got the larger one; because if I had gotten the size he suggested, my ring wouldn’t even go on my finger in the summertime!

Good idea! The jeweler has already tried to talk me out of sizing up, so I might need to go back and hold my ground. I had the sizers on but very briefly. I’ll go back and see them. Thanks for the confidence boost!

I got my ring resized 3 times. The ring sizer isn't accurate if you have a thin band because the ring sizer is pretty thick and takes up more room on your finger than a thin band. They told me I was size 5.25, so that's what my FH got when he proposed, then I got it sized down to 4.75 and it was still too big, so I went down to 4.25 (which is what the jeweler suggested), but then it was too small, so I finally settled on size 4.5. I was having the same issue as you.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one! I think I'm gonna take it back to the jeweller and get it sized up to 5. The ring sizers had me at 5 1/4, but that was huge, so the jeweller suggested 4.75 but after wearing it for a few days it's definitely too small. Thanks for sharing, you've given me the confidence to go back and ask!

I would just get it adjusted or at least size rechecked. Your ring is beautiful!

At first I was very aware of my engagement ring. Especially when it’s warm outside my fingers swell a tiny bit so my ring is a lot more snug versus right now in the winter where it’s pretty loose. Now I’ve been engaged almost a year and I barely notice it’s there. I think you just have to get used to it

Hi! What ever happened with your ring? I've had my ring for a few weeks and have been very itchy and dry. It's not a full on allergic reaction like I've had to other jewelry, so I'm not sure if it's the adjustment period. Interested to hear what happened with your situation. Ty!
