Returnable Alcohol?

Shelby, on September 20, 2020 at 8:57 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11

Hello- My fiancé and I would like to do a DIY open bar at our wedding with various types of packaged alcohol (beer, seltzers etc.) and I am curious if there are stores that will let you return unopened alcohol if for some reason it is not all consumed. When I google the topic I get results that say returning alcohol is illegal in most states but I know I have heard of certain liquor stores buying back alcohol. Thanks in advance for the help!

I would reach out to your local liquor stores and ask them. We have one in our area that accepts unopened bottles as long as the labels aren’t messed up.

Costco does for sure. You can call a local Bevmo and see what their policy is.

I believe California, Georgia, and Wisconsin are the only states where you can’t return alcohol.

Total wine and Sams club take returns on unopened alcohol. Maybe it varies by location though so I would just call your local store if I were you.

Costco takes unopened returns, at least pre-Covid.

It depends on your state. Unopened alcohol in CA cannot be returned.

We live in Tennessee so the liquor warehouse we're using does allow for us to return alcohol. They require that the seal be unbroken and it can't be refrigerated in order for us to return unused alcohol bottles. I would just contact the store you're interested in using to supply your alcohol.

I’ve been told that if the seal isn’t broken you can return it.

Yes, rules will vary by state AND by store. Some will let you return almost anything unopened. One store I spoke to wouldn’t accept anything cold for returns (white wine, beer), and another store I spoke to wouldn’t accept anything sparkling. I think one would only accept wine returns by the case. So, it will vary across the board — important to ask each store, may help you determine where to buy from! We were able to return all unopened liquor bottles in MA.
