Required Covid Test to Fly

Alli, on January 19, 2021 at 5:30 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 19
Hi all!
For those flying international for weddings and/or honeymoons to/from the USA: I just was reading up on the new regulations that are apparently being implemented as of January 26th which requires a negative covid test to enter the USA. We are planning our honeymoon (again) for Europe, but how do we obtain a test once leaving Europe? I found a statement, “Research should be done on the availability of testing in the country they are traveling from to ensure passengers are able to board their flight to the US.” Yikes! What if we have a difficult time obtaining one?! I cannot imagine having to wait hours to obtain a test and then wait up to several days for the results as it currently is in my city! We actually ran out of covid tests last month. This makes boarding an international flight stressful which I usually love international flights! Any advice or info?! Thanks!

Keep in mind, the change in travel restrictions was done on one of the last days of this presidency and will likely be immediately reversed tomorrow.

Well my guess would be contacting the nearest United States embassy in which ever part of Europe you’ll be in. They may be able to help assist you with getting tested as well as if you end up testing positive in Europe and cant board your flight. Good luck and hope it all works out!

Oh by that I mean trump opened travel back up to certain places which is why you’re seeing those protocols. Biden will likely close travel back up.

When is your trip? The rules could change many times between now and then, especially considering you are dealing with multiple jurisdictions. All throughout this pandemic the rules and restrictions have changed daily/weekly/monthly.

I wouldn't personally travel internationally right now, so I haven't dealt with this. But I would do all the research you can about testing in your destination city, including getting someone on the phone to walk you through the procedures/timing. And then call again and ask someone else (because whoever you talk to may be unsure about how it actually works currently).

There's too much at stake with not being able to catch a return flight from another country to just hope it will work out.

So true! I don’t know what is going on half the time in this country due to the ongoing changes. Good idea about calling a second time for consistency!!

Your best bet would be to contact the US Embassy in the country you travel to. Europe (at least Western Europe) has actually done a decent job at operating testing sites, with some places even having them at airports. I would also think that once the law has been in effect for a few weeks/months the US state department might have more guidance on how to get tested in specific countries.
Also, each country has a health department so you should be able to Google “how to get tested in France for covid” and get some answers there, just like you would do in order to figure out how to get tested in the US.

Thanks for the info. We’re going to Jamaica to a Sandals resort for our honeymoon for 7 days right after our wedding in April. My fiancé is a firefighter/ medic & I work at a hospital so we’re getting the vaccine (our 2nd shot is next week). We plan on getting a rapid test the day before our wedding. I’ll be checking with them 2 or 3 weeks before to see what the requirements are.

When are you planning your honeymoon? I wouldn't be so worried about not being able to come back to the US but more about being allowed into Europe. As far as I know most European countries only have a very short list of "green" countries from which they allow tourists to come in. Right now I also wouldn't want to travel to Europe since most countries have a pretty strict lockdown. But the summer should be better.

As far as I know you are almost always able to go home as long as there are flights (probably with quarantine or a negative test or both depending on state).

I am waiting and hoping for the US to let non-citizens enter from Europe so that my friends and family can come to my wedding in March. Is the new rule about negative covid tests also for all non Americans entering on tourist visas?

Oh my gosh, I hope they can come! Wow.
We cancelled our trip a couple months ago and have not rebooked it yet. As far as I know, it states all travelers require a negative test within 3 days of boarding the plane. Today is the first I’ve heard of it though...

    Thank you!

Honestly, I am not very hopeful that they will be able to come. It is hard but I was aware of that possibility when we set our date and started planning. Everyone was okay with this decision. If I knew for sure that travel would be allowed in the summer maybe we would have set our date for later (we get married March 20) but since no one knows for sure we didn't want to wait.

I just found the official link:

    https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/testing-international-air-travelers.html

It says it doesn't replace the presidential proclamations about travel restrictions. :-(

But for all Americans who are honeymooning outside the State the cdc-website has helpful information.

Please wait a few days before checking regulations, as they are likely to change.

Nearly all European countries have better testing than we do, and they also have travel restrictions. You'll need to keep an eye on *both*.

That said, September is a long way away, and things can be *very* different by then.

My wedding & honeymoon is also in Jamaica. I just contacted our TA about the restrictions. If you find out about if they offer testing on the resort or where to get rapid testing, please message me. Thx

Not sure where you are staying, but it appears Sandals just made an announcement they are offering it right at their resorts!
