Renting a Wedding Dress

Elizabeth, on May 9, 2022 at 6:09 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 9

I am currently renting a wedding dress that I absolutely love. By doing so I am saving nearing $1,000.00. HOWEVER....the amount I am worrying about if it will all work out is causing me great stress. I received the contract and noticed a few concerning points.

1. Backup Dress - in the event that the dress I selected becomes unavailable they will provide a backup dress. They reserve the right to discontinue any wedding or backup dress at any time.

2. Deposit - deposit is returned at their discretion. They reserve the right to return all or a portion of the deposit.

3. Damage - when I picked out the dress I was told that short of me being attacked by a pack of wolves I won't be responsible for damage but the contract is fairly open.

4. I can pick up the dress two days before my wedding and have to have it back within two days.

5. REMOVAL- They reserve the right to terminate Renter’s right to rent dresses at any time in the event of Renter’s breach of this Agreement or for no reason or any other reason in their discretion.

6. Alterations - they have an in-house seamstress and I pay for that separately. That is if they fall in line with the approved alterations which are not listed anywhere. Thankfully it fit me perfectly.

I realize this may be standard language for this type of rental but I'm scared to take a risk like this. I am renting to save money and I feel like in the end I could have just bought the dress at retail. My gut is telling me it isn't a good idea. I haven't signed the contract yet.

Has anyone else had any experience renting their wedding dress?

Woah. i think the thing that bugs me most about this is the first item where the dress you want may not even be available and they'd just give you a back up dress because at that point i wanna think you fell for a certain dress so to know you may not get that one you like is kind of iffy.

I looked at renting a dress because who wouldn’t want to save money on a dress you only wear once!!!! I just didn’t find anything I liked, sadly. I would read reviews of the salon very carefully. The place I went had great reviews. Other brides will let you know if they’ve been screwed. I imagine they have to have language like that in the contract because if something happens to the dress that’s out of their control, they have to do something.

I’ve never heard of renting a dress. That makes me VERY nervous. I personally would rather cut in other areas to buy my own than renting

I never knew renting a Wedding Dress was a thing. While it’s only for a day, it matters and I would not want our day compromised around the insecurity of renting. Perhaps you could consider buying sample gowns or preowned gowns instead? That is a cost friendly way to get a bridal gown you can be secure about.

Check them out, I got a beautiful gown that was normally $3000 for $165 and it only needed hemmed. It was a used gown but I truly didnt care about that and I saved so much money!

To me this seems too open ended. "At their dicression" is very vague. Points 2, 3, 4 and 6 seem standard based on what youve said.
Of course I'm not looking at the full contract but if they don't have specific examples of why you'd get a backup dress or why they'd refuse to give it to you/take it back early I'd ask about that.
Also, is there a clause about you getting 100% of your money back if they choose to not rent you the dress you picked? You absolutely should have the option to get all your money back if they offer a backup dress and you don't like it and don't wear it, or if they decide to not rent to you anymore or take the dress back early for a not valid reason (this is where you need clarification of "our discression")
I'd also ask when and how they will notify you of issues with the dress (another bride wore it and it's ruined, for example. If another bride has it altered even though it fits you perfectly right now, basically anything that could physically happen to the dress) make sure you are notified ASAP, and not just a few days before your wedding.
So ask the questions in writing, get responses in writing. Ask for an updated contract if you need to after those conversations.
Lastly, read all the reviews you can find. See if anyone had issues with renting from them. Google, yelp, Facebook, etc. If they have hundreds of positive reviews and only 5-15 negative, then it's probably fine.

While saving money is great I would be very concerned especially about number 1. Ask at shops for samples and disconinued or check out second hand options. My friend got her wedding dress dirt cheap because it was discontinued and was in the back for scraps (she got to it before they took it apart). It was beautiful

The contract would be a NO for me. You put down a deposit, and you might not even get the dress you want?? Two days before the wedding?

I bought a beautiful sample dress for 900. With such shoddy terms on the rental, you are better off buying

Many years ago an aunt rented a wedding dress to “save money”. And plus sizes were not as readily available so there was a limited selection to begin with. She couldn’t do alterations of any kind, including pinning the inside temporarily. As a result, she said she would never rent a dress again for any reason. Renting dishes and other reception items, absolutely, but never clothing.
