Renting a microphone for ceremony?

KarenO, on March 6, 2018 at 11:51 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 7

Hi, I just recently learned that we need to provide a microphone for our officiant for our ceremony. We are having a cello/flute duo for the ceremony and cocktail hour music, and they don't provide these services. We have a DJ for the reception, and would have to pay him an extra $250 to show up two hours early to mic the ceremony. I'm sure we could come up with the money, but it wasn't in our original budget.

Are there alternate ways to rent a microphone/sound system? I tried searching on here and on google, and didn't really see many places offering this kind of service. We're getting married in the Philly suburbs with an outdoor ceremony, and will have about 130-150 people. Thanks!

Your officiant doesn't have any, not a spare or backup? That's odd, our officiant had a spare mic and speaker just in case. We had our DJ provide the mic because it seemed like a hassle to get our own, and then what do we do with it kind of thing?

I can't imagine that you would be able to find a reputable vendor that would be able to provide this at a huge difference to what your DJ is going to charge you. I would try to negotiate a bit with them first and if not, pay the $250.

@Nas we are having a judge as our officiant, so I'm not sure that he has additional equipment. He mainly does courthouse weddings.

@An that was what I was thinking too. Honestly, I was a bit surprised that something like this wasn't more widely available. And, even if I find someone for $25-$50 cheaper, would it be worth the additional hassle? More than that, I'd have to consider it.

I have attached the quote/PO that we got from an audio visual rental company. It came to $200 for the equipment, so it's very similar to what your DJ would charge.

We just hired our DJ for the extra time. He provided the sound equipment for the ceremony, he did all the ceremony music, he also played music for a half hour before the ceremony while guests arrived and found seats (and several guests commented on how great an atmosphere he provided during that time with his music choices and got them excited for a fun wedding), and working with our venue's coordinator, he was really good at making sure the timing was perfect for everything and the ceremony ran seamlessly. I'd say it was well worth hiring him for the extra time.
