Rented plates vs disposable

Jessica, on July 17, 2019 at 10:30 AM Posted in Planning 0 14
Hey ladies need some opinions on dinner plates! We were originally supposed to be getting “high quality” disposable plates from our caterer. Well I just saw a picture of them and they clash with our reception decor bad. This wouldn’t be an issue but we’re planning to set them out as place settings with menus on top. My mom is suggesting we purchase our own disposables to avoid renting and having to wash actual plates. What does everyone think in their experience? Is disposable way easier than renting plates? Or would it not be too difficult to just rent them?

Is there anyway you can ask the caterer to purchase different color disposable plates?

It depends on the formality of your event. If you’re having a more casual reception, disposable is fine.

How much would it cost to rent? With my rental company it ended up being around $5 per dozen plates which I think is a good price. I also think renting is more environmentally friendly than disposable plates, which is one of the reasons I chose renting over disposable.

I really prefer the disposable (specifically biodegradable). My biggest concern is that rentals are expensive enough - let alone if anything gets damages. I'd rather not have to worry about it. I bought cute cocktail glasses for our signature drinks, I was considering the full place setting, but didn't need to. We used the 'non-pretty' biodegradable ones from our caterer. It was not a detail that anyone minded. Below is a picture table setting from the sweetheart table:

The plates are like 40 cents a piece or something! The cost I don’t mind, our rental bill is kinda higher anyway. I was more worried about the task of them being cleaned and everything. I am with you, I hate throwing plastic out! Definitely why I’m leaning more towards renting.

Luckily my caterer is able to provide different colors of plates (white is what we selected), so see if your caterer has other colors.

If not, it would all depend on whether or not you have it in your budget to rent plates

Disposable are ok, depends on what they are like and your wedding style and theme. How much does it cost to rent them against the cost of disposable?

So my caterer also provided plastic plates, but I didn't like them. Renting real plates can be super expensive, so we just purchased our own plastic plates and the caterer took that portion off our bill since we didn't use theirs. Maybe you could ask about that?

My caterer also provides the "high quality" disposable plates included in the price, but I think they are silver, and I would prefer gold, so I'm planning to ask if there are others or get my own. She said if we rented plates, it would be an extra few for them to clear the plates, on top of the price from the rental company to rent the plates. So we are probably just renting glasses and silverware, and using nice looking disposable plates.

We were thinking about this too and ultimately decided to rent plates. We figured it was just easier since we were renting other things, too. We do not have to wash any of the plates, though. According to our rental company, we just need to have the caterers scrape them and rinse them quickly and then put them in a box to be picked up. This should fall on the responsibility of the caterer- not you guys. If you have to seriously scrub wash everything, I would go for another option. But if you only need your caterer to scrape the plates and run them under water for a second before going in the box I would go this route. Part of this decision depends on your budget and decor, too. Either way, your guests will be happy and will be paying more attention to what goes on their plate. Smiley smile

Fortunately, we’re able to rent real plates and flatware from our caterer- who includes the bussing and serving, even for a buffet style wedding. But we were also considering buying real looking disposables from Etsy, but for good quality sets the price wasn’t too different

Our wedding will be very casual so we are opting for disposable.
