Removable Sleeves

Jeanette, on August 7, 2018 at 1:41 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8

I am interested in adding detachable sleeves to my wedding dress. I would wear the sleeves for the ceremony and remove them for the reception (because I get hot dancing!). The only issue is that the seamstress doing the bridal fitting says that removable sleeves don't look good and she is not comfortable doing them. So she wants me to decide sleeves or no sleeves. Has anyone done this to their dress? I was thinking she could use small buttons or hooks (the same ones used on the back of a bra?).

I thought about adding a topper, but the issue is my dress has thick straps and a plunging back. I haven't seen a topper that would look good with that combination, so I feel like removable sleeves are my only option. Also, for reference, this is a wedding in January and I am not very interested in a wrap or stole, I want something that I can wear down the aisle. Thank you! Smiley heart

I have seen removable straps added, but never whole sleeves. I am not an expert, but I would see where she would be right. It would be hard to get them to lay correctly in the armholes if they were not sewn into it. I feel like you would probably be able to tell that they were removable...or look like some kind of strange undershirt.

I would trust her... I see where she's coming from. I don't think removable sleeves would end up looking right.

Can you post a pic of your dress?

Would a bolero or jacket work?

There are a lot of different styles/fabrics that can be used for overlays! I don't think removable sleeves are your only option. I think if you found something with a thick enough lace pattern (like the Lovely Lace example in this article) it would absolutely look cohesive over straps and a low back. It just needs to be long enough to meet where your dress fabric starts on your back.

You could also try to find similar fabric and ask your seamstress to cut/fit it into an overlay style that works for you.

It's really hard to tell without seeing a picture of your dress.

Thanks! Maybe I will reconsider a topper then. I actually have a yard of the lace and fabric underneath that my dress was made from. I don’t know if I can get more, but I think my seamstress probably could. I am hesitant to post pictures because I don't want my FH to see, but for
