Relaxed Dinner, Drinks & Dancing?

Alycia, on February 20, 2019 at 4:27 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 16

What do you all think of having a relaxed outdoor reception where the guests arrive to music, drinks, and food ready for them to enjoy. No formal seating. No formal order of being served. Everyone choose what and when they want to eat. (Food would be available for an hour.) I'm having a small wedding and reception of about 50 close friends and family members. I'd like for everyone to just come and enjoy themselves. I would still have a formal champagne toast, first dance, and cake cutting.

Honest opinions would be great. Would you be offended to be at a wedding that doesn't have a more organized dinner service?

It sounds very casual to me, which I don't think is a negative if that is what you are going for. I'd just make sure guests know that.

I think this is great! We planned to do something like this in our back yard initially, but FH kept adding to the guest list that the thought of 75 people in my new house was scary so we went the more traditional route and rented a venue.

Low-key, buffet style food, great music, drinks flowing, friends dancing...sounds great to me!

I think you know your crowd the best. With a small wedding, they are usually much more relaxed and I don't see an issue if I were to attend your wedding. I'm having more like 150 people, but we're not doing formal seating, not telling people when they can eat, etc. I just want the reception to be a fun one and 95% of the people coming are very small town, slow paced country guests so I don't think they are going to complain. Are you doing catering or DIY? Alcohol/bartender? I'd make sure there was plenty of water (I just saw July and thought it's really hot here in July so stay hydrated).

This sounds more like a cocktail style reception, and I think they're the best! I prefer them, and so we had one ourselves with about the same number of guests you're planning for. I will say, though, that I think food should be available for the whole time. Guests can get caught up in mingling and miss food service or not get all they want, so you don't want that.

I'm so happy to hear that other brides have the same vision! It's going to be an evening reception, champagne toast at sunset. It'll be catered by the venue, with a bartender. Definitely drinks flowing, music and dancing. The idea of keeping food available is a good one.

I think as long as you have enough food for everyone to get full then this is totally fine. Like a pp mentioned, I’d probably have food the whole time or at least have it extended more than an hour.

I like this idea. I wouldn't be offended at all. I would actually prefer it to a super formal wedding.

I think that sounds FANTASTIC. It's kinda the feel I want to go with, though with it being in the fall it'll have to be inside. I think it's a wonderful idea!!

We are doing this too! I am getting a sign made with a timeline on it so people know that dinner will be available (through different food stations) between 6pm-8pm. We're also doing a few themed food stations so theres not a rush for food. I dont want anyone to miss out on eating or get annoyed that they have to wait in line!

We are doing something very similar but with 20-25 guests. We rented an Airbnb so all our immediate family will be staying at the villa with us for a weekend of food, drinks and dancing.

    That sounds fun.
No need to go by a schedule and sounds way more relaxing.
