Rehearsal dinner tasting?

kaylarae, on October 20, 2014 at 8:49 AM Posted in Planning 0 9

First of all I am SO grateful that my wonderful in laws are taking care of the rehearsal dinner. They have also been very generous with letting me invite as many guests as I want since all of my family and friends are coming 1500 miles for the wedding.

My question is, did you go for tastings for your RD? Was it worth it? To be honest, I could not care less about doing this because all of the places they were considering are fine.

The problem is, the weekend they want to come and do it (they live 5 hours from our house and we are an hour from where the wedding will be.) does not at all work for us. FH wants to make it work so he can see his parents which I totally get I would love to see then too! But the next 3 weekends leading up to the weekend they want to come are all jam packed for FH & I - we're already overbooked. The weekend they want to come is also 3 days before my dad flies down from Canada for a visit. I feel like I just won't have the time or energy to have visitors at that point. It was our only free weekend for the next 6 weeks to just relax at home.

If they do force the visit and end up staying in our house that weekend, do I really have to go to the tasting when I have 500 other things to do that weekend? Honestly as long as the food is served hot I don't really care what it is. I just have so much else on my plate for the next little while that I was hoping since they offered to plan the RD that it would be off my pile of stress and I wouldn't have to worry about it.

I didn't do a tasting. I went to the restaurant in question with my F-ils in order to see if the space worked and the food style was to our liking.

I think it depends on his parents. Maybe they would be ok doing the tasting and reporting back to you if you put it to them that you trust their judgement and it would really help you out. If they are the type that might be offended if you don't go is there anything you can put off to another day without getting majorly stressed? It's a hard question without knowing the people involved. They are travelling a distance for this but is it mostly for a visit with you or for the tasting?

We didn't do a tasting but we did choose a restaurant that we had eaten at before and liked.

We didn't because we were out of state, but my parents did it for us! I think they were glad they did, helped them figure out which items would work best.

We did but informally. We wanted this new independently owned restaurant, so we went to see their space and meet with the manager to discuss what we wanted and what they offered/the deal. We had a great visit and then said we were going to go to the bar, have a beer and some apps (we did a heavy apps RD). We tried a couple that were on their private event menu to make sure the food was good. IT WAS. The manager comped our food when we went to pay. We totally went with them. They were awesome.

That said, we were prepared to pay as regular customers at the time. I've never heard of anyone doing a formal tasting for a rehearsal.

I think letting them pick the menu and telling them that you have complete confidence (and you're looking forward to being surprised) is worth a lot of in-law coin!
