Rehearsal Dinner Stress

Cora, on January 23, 2020 at 9:22 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8
I need some input. I was able to book the location I wanted for our rehearsal dinner. Their online info stated a certain amount per person ($22), but once I received the final cost per person from the restaurant the cost is double ($45) what I planned for. My city does not have a lot of options to choose from to accommodate my group (15-20 people). I am thinking about asking each person (at least the parents since they are not paying for the wedding) to chip in $20 to help with cost and Also making the dinner optional. I’m conflicted. I don’t want to appear tacky, but I don’t want to pay $900 for a rehearsal dinner. I would love some suggestions.

If you want afford a rehearsal dinner, don’t have a rehearsal. It’s not anyone else’s responsibility to pay for an event that you decided to host. Also, rehearsal dinners are always optional.

You need to host them properly if you have a rehearsal dinner, which means you have to pay. Order in some pizzas if a restaurant is too expensive. There are lots of inexpensive options.

How about something more casual that you can afford? Rehearsal dinners at a restaurant aren’t necessary. So asking others to pay for the dinner you selected isn’t the right way to handle the increased quote.

I agree with others- rehearsal dinners need to be paid for by the host(ess). If online says something different than in person you should ask the restaurant about this and why it is changed. You can always just do it at your home and order in from an Italian place nearby (you can get giant platters of baked ziti and chicken Francais and such for pretty cheap)

You can ask the place what other cost are they adding -or that you’ve added. Tax and tip wouldn’t add up to that. I would not pay for booze at a rehearsal dinner. That being said, I am asking the hotel where we’re staying if they have a small conference room so we can gather and grab pizza. Or you could host in your home pizza, chicken from the grocery store, food from Costco, etc. -it doesn’t have to be anything sit down.

If you want to have a rehearsal dinner, you need to pay for it. Having a rehearsal should always have some kind of dinner with it but both are optional. You should never ask people to "chip in" on an event you are hosting. Maybe just order pizzas and gather at one of the parents houses or something afterwards.

Have you asked them why the price doubled? I would try to find a restaurant that is more affordable, host everything at your house or a rented house and order pizzas, or just skip the rehearsal dinner. Asking people to chip in is not appropriate.

$900 seems pretty reasonable for a rehearsal dinner. I'd just try to get out of the contract or cut money from your wedding budget. Asking guests to pay seems pretty rude.
