Rehabilitate damaged hair

Joni, on June 14, 2015 at 12:36 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9

I've dyed my hair every 8 weeks for the past 2 years. Different things but usually a same version of the same, partial highlight, all over color, and tone. I only use salon quality products such as Moroccanoil, Biolage, and Redken. In March i had it transitioned to an exagerated ombre so my roots didn't get touched and because my ends were already pretyt light. Every since then my hair has not been the same. It doesn't dry anymore and always feels like there's build up even with clarifying. I deep condition often and it's still not doing anything.

All my googling points to it being extremely distressed and then says to buy expensive products to fix it. Anyone have any experience with bring their hair back from the dark side. I'll be cutting it after the wedding so I'm just trying to baby it til then.

When you last colored, did you do it or have it professionally done? Sometimes even when using salon quality products, we can cause damage. I would go to a salon and have a consultation on the damage then go from there.

There are a few things you could try.

    1. Most obvious, get a haircut now. Don't chop it all off necessarily, but give it a healthy trim to get rid of the most damaged ends.

    2. Experiment with the products you have. Is there anything you started using since your last color that it could be reacting to? There are a few high quality professional product that make my generally healthy hair feel like absolute garbage.

    3. & 4. Depend on exactly which products you're using and how often you are washing and deep conditioning, but try washing less often (and becoming bff's with a good dry shampoo) and switching deep conditioners and potentially doing that less often as well. Not all deep conditioners work well for everyone. I've had some that I've absolutely hated because they leave my hair feeling like you're describing. Malibu C Miracle Repair has been my favorite, it comes in a small packet and leaves my hair feeling strong and soft. More info about your hair type and which products specifically you are using could give me a better idea of what could help you.

All my colors have been done at a salon. I had 2 inches cut off last week and it didn't make much difference.

I shampoo Sundays and Thursdays and heat style on Mondays and Fridays. Dry shampoo the rest of the week.

I know it sounds silly and kinda gross but put mayo in it and put on a shower cap and leave it be for a while.

Have you tried Neutrogena Shampoo Anti-Residue Formula? I use it whenever I use a lot of product/heavy conditioners in my hair. You can purchase it at Walgreens, Wal-Mart, ulta, Target pretty much anywhere.

This sounds exactly like what happened to me 2 summers ago! I ended up cutting like 10 inches off initially. Then my salon did kerastase treatments on me for a few weeks. They were pricey, like $60 each, but seemed to help a bit. It really just took time. I also shampoo just 2x per week. Good luck, I know how you feel. And it's not a good feeling!

Try coconut oil on the ends. Organic, virgin coconut oil. That stuff is AMAZING!!! And the Neutrogena shampoo pictured above is great also. Be easy on the coconut oil though, as too much will be difficult to get out. If you overdo it, definitely use the Neutrogena shampoo to get the rest out. Hope this helps!

First, mix 1 tsp of baking soda with your shampoo to strip off any product that is preventing the "good stuff" you are using to penetrate the hair.

Then--go simple and skip the expensive stuff with a bunch of sometimes damaging ingredients that you don't need to rehab the hair. Choose plain coconut oil, shea butter, castor oil (increases tensile strength of the hair-great for damaged hair), or olive oil. Warm it, then slather it on at night on damaged parts and massage well and sleep in a plastic cap. If that's not possible, put it on and wrap in a warm, moist towel all evening. Use a MILD shampoo and rinse off in the a.m.

It will take about 3 months to restore your hair and return it to all it's shining glory--so keep it up for that September wedding!

Mayo, coconut oil, or avocado all work really well. I used a leave in placenta treatment (I know it sounds gross) to get my hair healthy again for my wedding and it worked amazingly. I also use macadamia nut oil on the ends almost every day.
