Refunds-wedding is off

Rebecca, on December 18, 2019 at 8:36 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 17
So after 9 years of being together my future husband and I have decided to call off the wedding and go our separate ways it is for the best.

How do i can my money back from vendors? I told my photographer that we called it off and the response i got was "oh no sorry to hear that ". She was already paid in full so not sure what to say especially with it being a week before Christmas. HELP.

First, I’m so sorry you’re going through this. It’s not easy to have to reach out to all your vendors and cancel when it’s still fresh. I’d review all your contracts. Although it would be nice for all your vendors to refund you, a lot of that will most likely be based on the contract language.

You will need to review all of your contracts and see what the rules are. In most cases I have heard, if you the customer are cancelling, chances are you won't receive much if any deposits back.

First, I am so sorry for this situation. I know it is rough. I would say that it depends on the contracts. I have seen some vendors day one you pay it is non refundable so if that is stated in the terms then no refund even if the wedding has been cancelled. Call each vendor and ask their policy. You may lose half best case scenario.

I agree with Sarah. Review your contracts with each vendor and see what (if any) refunds you have the right to. Then just politely contact them and explain that the wedding has been cancelled and you like your refund in X amount as stated in your contract. I'm sorry you're going through this, especially during the holidays. Wishing you the best Smiley heart

When was the wedding. I would just speak to them and restate the terms and you might get your money.

Based on that, they are entitled to keep the money you paid for booking fees, but you should receive a refund for the rest as no services were provided. If you had engagement photos taken, the photographer is entitled to the money for those services as well.

I am so sorry that this has happened, and although it may be for the best, these things are never easy - especially when trying to consider the logistics of the wedding planning. I would review each vendor contract, as many will have a section regarding cancellations/date changes/refunds. Depending on the specific contract, you may be able to get a refund or partial refund, but you likely will not get 100% of your money back. Consider other options here - will they allow you to hold onto the contract for a future date or transfer the contract if you know someone else getting married/looking for a vendor and that person would pay you directly, etc.

I’m so sorry this happened to you. It’s so hard even if it’s for the best. I recently had to cancel my wedding as well. I was able to get a partial refund from the venue, minus deposit. I forfeited my photography, floral and catering deposits.

I would review your contracts like other posters have wrote. I know my vendors and deposit will not refund unless the vendor backs out

I posted a copy of the refund policy from the contract and it stated that refund will be issued within 60 days of cancellation date and my vendor just messaged me back saying 90 days by march 13th (93days to be exact from cancellation date of dec 11th). Now im confused do i confront her with the photo of the contract or just let it be?

If she is giving you your money back, I would just let it go. Although it isn't as quick as you might like, I would be happy to receive the money back at all.

Oh my, I am so sorry! Unfortunately, it is going to be based on what your contracts say. You can try to contact them all and let them know what happened and see what the next step is but legally, they can keep any deposits you have made if it is within the contract to do so. Again, I am sorry!

It looks like you can get returns for everything but the deposit amount since she/he did not provide the actual services and you're canceling before 30 days prior. And that you get the return by money order 60 days from your cancellation. I don't think it hurts to email or call to clarify or better understand what the contract is stating.

Sorry to hear that! Read your contracts. Usually the deposit is not refundable and anything paid beyond the deposit is refundable up to a certain date.
