Red velvet cake - stains your teeth?

Private_User832, on February 24, 2017 at 9:35 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

My fiancé loves red velvet cake and wants that for our wedding cake flavor. I've read that you shouldn't use red velvet for your wedding cake because it stains your teeth red from the dye, which would then shows in your pictures. We can't try their cake in advance to see so just curious if anyone has an experience with this and would agree or disagree?

I have never had red velvet from a bakery stain and i used to work in a bakery. Now the cheap box mix is a different story.

Red velvet is my favourite! I've never noticed stained teeth from it though, it shouldn't take that much dye.

I eat my weight in red velvet during the holidays and I've never noticed stains on my teeth.

I've never ever noticed it to stain my teeth- you may get dark cake chunks in there- but honestly- the cake is at the end of the night- it's not going to be in your epic family portraits or of the ceremony- and it's an easy fix with a trip to the bathroom.

Totally a none issue- I wanted red velvet but it would have cost way more- so nope.

Thanks! @jorocka - we're lucky that our package included cake and red velvet was one of the options for no extra cost

I personally can't stand food coloring. Either can my Mom. I looked online for a red velvet cake recipe, and it called for 4 tablespoons of red food coloring I it. No one needs that ...

I can't eat red velvet cake because of a food dye allergy. Maybe you could have a tier of regular white cake for those who can't eat it or don't want to risk red stains on teeth or clothing? (I wouldn't know because I've never actually eaten red velvet cake).

Real red velvet cake was originally red because of a chemical reaction between vinegar and the cocoa powder that was available at the time. Cocoa powder is refined differently now, so is causes less of a red color when it interacts with vinegar. It does not need any food dye in it to have the same taste and texture. If I can make mine without dye, any bakery worth ordering a wedding cake from should be able to make you a red velvet cake with no dye, the taste will be the same but it won't have that horrible fake color that we associated with it.

We chose red velvet for our wedding cake flavor. No teeth stains from the tasting, or from any other time.

Our cake was half red velvet and I can't think of anyone experiencing red teeth. The only times I've ever had a red dye issue is if I'm making red velvet cupcakes/cake at home out of the box Smiley smile

I've eaten tons of red velvet cake and never had a teeth staining issue. The same cannot be said for blue icing/frosting. That shit will turn your whole mouth blue.
