Reconsidering The Dress

Chloe, on May 9, 2020 at 12:45 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19
I need some help! Due to unfortunate circumstances with my first dress, I rushed out and bought a dress off the rack. This dress checks all the boxes for me, with the exception of maybe more beading. But when my mom saw me in it her first words were "Suck it in." Its not the first time she has made comments about my weight (even tho I'm down 60lbs), so I wasn't surprised and I thought I had brushed it off.
But now I can't stop doubting if this is the right dress for me... It just doesn't feel special, but I wouldn't change a thing about it.
Would you get a different dress or keep it and try to make it feel special?Reconsidering The Dress 1

It’s such a gorgeous dress! Honestly it sounds like the dress IS what you like and want but that your mom kind of spoiled the dress for you :/
You are beautiful. You look beautiful in the gown. The gown is pretty. Please don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, how do YOU feel when you’re in the gown?

Thank you, I really appreciate it. Honestly sometimes I love the dress, and other times I feel super awkward in it. I bought some spanx but it just made it feel more awkward?
I really do like the dress, but I dont know how to make it feel special?

Ma’am, suck what in?! Dress looks great and congrats on the weight loss. I think once you get your accessories the look will feel complete.

Ugh! Why would anyone make a comment like that? We brides are already stressed out & sensitive enough.

You look amazing in that dress! If YOU don’t like it anymore, that’s a different story. Is there a way you can try it on with accessories and see you through your eyes?

I have no clue what your mom is referring to because you look amazing. I think the dress is very pretty.

I don’t know where you would suck it in because you look stunning and so skinny in this!!! The dress is absolutely gorgeous. That comment was definitely unnecessary but also not true because you got nothing to suck in!

P.s. I love the glitzy sash/band and around the neckline! It’s perfect 😊

I also don’t think you have anything really to suck in. On the other hand, that’s how mermaid gowns are where they are figure flattering and some aren’t used to that since they are ideal for a certain body type. The biggest thing you can do to pull off an outfit is have confidence! You want a dress that you will feel good the whole day in. If you our self conscious about it the whole day, people do notice. So just make sure you hold your head up high, and have confidence in your look and choice and you will be fine!

Thank you, I think your right. I don't normally let things like this bother me because I feel like my body as a whole (not just appearance). I think I need to work out that doubt in the back of my head.

Eh.. My weight/body type has always been an issue for her. I normally brush it off, but I think its sticking a little cuz its my wedding day. I think you ladies are right and I need to focus on adding accessories, like the veil...

I really like the dress on you. I'm sorry your mom made a comment like that. I will say that although most people would probably say I'm pretty thin, I tend to forget to "tighten my core" when I walk sometimes and I'm trying to work on that!

The dress looks gorgeous on you! And congrats on the 60 pounds, that's impressive! You have nothing to worry about if you want to wear that dress on your wedding day!

Maybe your mom just doesn't like the mermaid style, it is a more modern silhouette. But in the end it's your wedding, not hers. You should wear what makes you happy and confident. Ignore anyone who disagrees with your choices, in the end the day is about you and your FH

I would think she would be so supportive of your weight loss! For your own health, it may be a good idea to distance yourself a bit from her or set some boundaries “When you say X, I feel Y. I would prefer you Z. Can you please try for me?” It’s taken me several years to “train” my dad how to treat me (thanks, therapy!). When he disrespected me, I’d tell him what he was doing and that I was going to end the fall and we could try again. Once I stopped talking to him for months. Our relationship is a lot better.
