Recommendations on storing a dress to avoid stretching

Julia, on November 21, 2019 at 6:01 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15
I know there are plenty of forums about how to store a wedding dress before the wedding, but most seem centered around the garment bag the dress will be in. My concern is leaving it hanging for a year and a half (wedding isn't until March 2021 but I already bought my dream dress). It has heavy beading and short sleeves so I'm worried about it getting stretched out and the sleeves getting those annoying shoulder bumps from the hanger (I currently have it on 3 felt hangers LOL). Has anyone stored their dress in a garment bag but laying down, not hanging? I also thought about folding it up but am also worried about wrinkles & creases. I just know my anxiety is going to keep me checking on it for the next 16 months to make sure it isn't getting ruined haha. Has anyone gone this route and kept it laying flat in a closet? I'm not as worried about discoloration because it's not white, it's almond/tan.

Just an idea that popped up while reading your post.

Have you thought about placing it in those storage containers that are very long? (keep inside the garment bag) They sometimes fit under the bed. As for the wrinkles you will probably still need to have it steamed since it would be stored for a few months.

hope this helps you a little!

I laid mine on the shelf in the closet. My parents have a spare bedroom with an empty closet. It laid for 9 months until alterations, then I let it hang for the last 2 months

Use the hanging straps that are sown into the dress. These are designed specifically to take the weight of the dress off of the sleeves. You can also get an acid free preservation box from gown preservation places to store it in for the time being. I wouldn't worry about it getting creases since you will probably have to get it pressed/steamed before the wedding anyway.

This does, thanks! I originally thought about storing just in the under bed storage bin, but worried because it wouldn't breathe in the plastic. But maybe if I put in the garment bag first and then make sure the lid isn't sealed, that might do the trick!

Yes, use the hanging straps. Every dress has them, and it's what they are there for. They take the weight, so the rest of the dress doesn't stretch out, or get those weird "hanger bumps."

You can also store it laying down flat, either in a garment bag (cloth, not plastic) or in one of those under-the-bed boxes.

Okay thanks! Wasn't sure if the hanging straps would be enough.

I'm paranoid about the straps being enough too since my dress is heavy! I have it laid accross our guest bed 😆

I had to store my dress for a while so I bought a box specifically designed for wedding dress storage and I am keeping it under my bed. I also bought some acid free tissue paper and placed it between all the folds (if you google wedding dress storage you should be able to find some videos on how to do this). I'm not too worried about creases because it will get steamed once alterations are done. Also, the benefit of storing it this way is that I'm not tempted to take it out and try it on because placing all the tissue paper was such a pain.

My dress was super heavy and brought far in advance from my wedding date. I actually ordered a muslin bag from amazon to store the dress in while laying flat inside the closet on a shelf. I also used acid free tissue to place in between folds. I know you want to make sure the dress can “breathe” wherever it’s being stored. I checked in on my dress quarterly until alterations. Once it was back from alterations which was about 3 weeks before the date it was hanging until the day of!

That's kind of what I was thinking too! I think I might buy a garment bag so FH doesn't see it but just lay it across guest bed or underneath so it can remain flat and not hanging. I'm so paranoid it will stretch because it's very heavy!

Thank you! Do you feel like the muslin bag was better than a standard garment bag? I was contemplating buying one but wasn't sure if it was worth the price tag. I ordered my dress online so it didn't come with a bag, but I know a lot of others have mentioned one from David's bridal for $10-20. I'm tempted to just order from Amazon corn convience and pay a bit extraneous lol

In my opinion, for a long term storage yes. When I was doing my research I kept seeing how the plastic bags, which is usually what the garment bags are, don’t allow the dress to breathe. I was very paranoid when I was trying to figure out how to store my dress in the beginning and I have no regrets at all with the muslin bag. It came with a cushioned hanger and acid free tissues. And to me was worth it

Yes mine is in a garment bag just laid accross the bed. I also put a giant stuffed panda on top so our cat won't lay on it lol. Certainly no professional storage techniques but hey it works!

Daughter's dress only had thin, mostly decorative, straps. It had a huge skirt and a train, so it was pretty heavy. It arrived a year before the wedding and we had to store it at our house. The bridal salon told us it would be fine as long as both the hanging loops sewn under the arms AND the loop on the underside of the train were always on the hanger, inside the white fabric bag. Daughter followed those instructions, and everything was fine. (As someone else said, the dress will need a good steaming once final alterations are complete, so don't worry too much about that.) Good luck! (FWIW, daughter tried her dress on about every two months, so that gave us a good chance to monitor how it was doing. Also, I agree with others, do NOT store the dress in plastic -- bag or box. If there is any humidity at all in your home, you risk it getting musty, etc.)

Okay thanks! I just worry the hanging straps aren’t enough. Definitely keeping it far away from plastic!
