Recessional Order? Help Please! :)

Jess & Sean, on April 14, 2014 at 3:45 PM Posted in Planning 1 6

A quick question as things are getting closer!

So my fiancee & I are not having a bridal party, but we are having a number of people in our wedding processional. These people won't be "standing up" with us at our wedding, but sitting in the first two rows.

Our processional is in this order:

Bride's mom

Groom's mom & dad

Groom's brother

Bride's sisters (2)

Bride's niece & nephew (holding cute sign)

Bride & dad

I'll obviously walk back up the aisle with my new husband, and my mom and dad will go together, but in what order do the others go? Will the kids be right after us (I have signage for them). Does it make sense to do a recessional at all if no one is standing up? When does our officiant (a close, personal friend) walk out? And generally how about the other guests?

I really can't recall how it has been done at other weddings. Thanks ladies, and few gents!

I think if they're going to sit down during the ceremony it wouldn't really make sense for them to get up and leave in the recessional. For example, commonly the bride's dad walks her down the aisle in the processional, but he doesn't walk back down during the recessional... I don't think...

I agree with Amanda - no need to have them walk for the recessional if they're sitting down during the ceremony.

Interesting.... this isn't the response I was expecting but good to know. how do guests usually file out of a wedding? I'm totally drawing a blank here on every wedding that I've been to...

I hadn't thought of this and we are in the same boat, wp wise.

I have always seen it as the guests recess from the first pew, then second, third, etc.

I've only been to weddings with attendants so once the bride/groom exit, the attendants exit, and then people just sort of file out of the rows to exit.

Traditionally, in the processional, the groom's parents would be seated before MOB. MOB is last guest seated. When MOB walks down the aisle, everyone knows the wedding party is coming soon.

For the recessional, B&G -- optionally followed by sign holders. After the wedding party recesses, the officiant signals bride's parents to exit their row, then groom's parents. Then the rest of the guests alternate out of their rows.

Bride's parents are always closest to couple.
