Reception with no table setting?

Hayley, on November 26, 2016 at 12:23 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

Hi all! Hope everyone is having a wonderful Holiday weekend! I need some guidance/advice. Okay, so we are doing street style tacos for our reception dinner, very casual, buffet style. My caterer provides plates & utensils upon arrival. So, do I just NOT set up the tables with plates and utensils!? Being that they'll be provided.. and its buffet style so I'm assuming you'd get your plate while in line. My other thought was renting chargers, and placing them on the tables with some greenery to no leave such an empty space? Any advice would be highly appreciated! What are some important questions you all asked your caterers?

I've always seen the plate set at the table for a buffet.

I don't think chargers and tacos go together.

I am doing a buffet style too and our caterer will set up the utensils but the plates will be at the buffet. So maybe just set up just the utensils on the table. I know that it is tacos but some people may want them. I eat taco salads and would need a fork or spoon to eat it.

@celiamilton I know what you mean, are they worth even renting?

(almost) every buffet wedding I've been to had the silverware and glasses at the table while the plates were at the buffet so you don't have to carry around and wait in line with the plate

I think the center pieces are enough for the tables . I'm doing buffet as well and they will just get their plates silverware from the buffet line .

    No, chargers aren't worth renting.

The buffet weddings we've seen have the silverware, glassware, and a bread plate set on the table, but where the dinner plate would sit, there's an empty space. Some brides have printed up menu cards and placed them where the dinner plate would go. You could probably do something like that -- listing the ingredients that they can add to their tacos as well as any other foods you might be offering.

Chargers and tacos don't make sense to me. Chargers are not casual they are an added expense purely to make the table look nicer.

I had a buffet and I had chargers but plates were where the food was.

We had a folded cloth napkin where the plate would go. Nothing fancy, but it filled up the space.

I wouldn't rent them. I think it's easier for people when the silverware is on the table, if you're going to do assigned seating, If not, wrap the silverware in naps and have baskets of them on the buffet.

Plates on the buffet table. I agree with the others, on the chargers. They are too formal for a casual taco buffet.

I like the idea of either placing the napkin at the pacesetting, or a menu card.

I just let them grab the stuff at the food line and bring it back. It didn't look bad with just the centerpieces on the tables and it doesn't last long that way anyway.

We're doing utensils on the table wrapped with a little tag that reads "thank you for sharing our first meal as Husband and Wife"

and then we're draping the napkins over the edge (or maybe some origami folding idk) to indicate a place setting.

We had a bbq buffet and did not have any plates/utensils on the tables, it was just the centerpiece in the center and a favor on the table at each seat in lieu of a place setting. It definitely has more of a casual feel than a full place setting but it was still beautifully done, and I'm sure people weren't like "Hey, where's my charger? This wedding sucks!"

Can you set up the napkins in the center where the plate would go? Doesn't have to be fancy but it would help set the space.

Flatware, glassware, napkin at each place setting. Plates on the buffet.

Don't overthink it! Smiley smile I think it will be fine with no chargers. I've been to weddings like this and didn't think anything of it.
