Reception songs that DON'T work

Hey all -

So we're in the process of getting together our "must have" and "do not play" songs for the DJ. FH and I have pretty radically different tastes in music (both from each other and from the general population). I've got a handful of songs that I LOVE and would dance all night to, but I'm concerned they might be a little eclectic for our guests.

So here's my question: have you ever been to a reception where the couple played some songs that just...didn't work. Didn't fit, didn't feel right, didn't get you going, what have you. Or did you make the mistake I'm afraid of at your own weddings? Thanks for your input!

Give your guests the option to submit some suggestions. The DJ can even announce who suggested it so they feel all special. This helps give you a base line and then you don't have to use every song your guest suggest. They do the work for you Smiley smile

The last wedding I went to the DJ played 'Wrecking Ball' by Miley Cyrus. It was weird and our whole group was talking about how it felt weird to hear at a wedding. He also played it again a few hours later. We all came to the conclusion that the DJ was going through some personal stuff that night.

I gave my guests the option to suggest songs and nobody did. :/

The only songs we're skipping are country, unless it's a love/slow dance song because so much of it is so hard to dance to. I went to a wedding last year where the DJ only played country and classic rock, which was fine music but for a bunch of mid 20 year olds (bride and groom included) it was really hard to dance to. We later found out the father of the bride paid for the DJ and told him to only play those types of songs, but our friend group spent most of the night standing around instead of dancing & the floor was pretty empty overall.
