Reception Security

Samantha, on August 20, 2017 at 1:25 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6

We are having our reception in a hotel that also has apartments on the very top floors. We will be on the 2nd floor, open layout, with an elevator in the hall giving everyone access to our space. I asked the venue if they provide any type of security to make sure hotel guests/apartment residents don't come in and help themselves to food/alcohol, and was told they do not. For this reason, and a couple potential unruly guests, we are looking into hiring our own security. For those of you who have hired security, what questions did you ask before hiring and what exactly did the security do? I did not know if it was common to have them at the door with a guest list verifying names or if that is too much like something you would see at a bar or club.

I've never honestly seen this, even with my venues that have several weddings at a time....

At our venue it is required that we hire 2 local sheriff. Call your non emergency sheriff/ police department. They can recommend what typically works best for your layout.

Celia, you have said before that when you officiate you generally just stay for a drink or two, then leave. Maybe you are not there when it happens. With all due respect, this thing happens all the time. Maybe at the facilities you work with, all food and drink is the same for all parties (but I doubt that), so less of a problem.

I would have a printed out list of guests. I don't see why guests should be offended. Will you know all guests by sight? I doubt it. if you are giving plus ones. I doubt you need an armed guard in this situation. I would ask the facility management, do they know someone who is tactful, yet still firm.

Call the local police or sheriff's non emergency number as suggested above. You can decide if you want them in plain clothes or uniforms. Most people I know have them in suits and let them just blend in as they keep an eye on things, which could be why @Celia has never seen them. I had three no one knew about at my daughter's wedding last week. Actual off duty officers are much better than a Rent a Cop type security in handling issues that may happen, but they are also about $20 dollars more an hour on average.

Our venue requires security when alcohol is involved. We set it up through the local police department. Just call the police receptionist or contact number to see if anyone is available.

I didn't even think about contacting our police department. I like the idea of having the security in plain clothes, it is a little more discreet. Thanks for the input guys, I'll look into it Smiley smile
