Reception Only?

Shay, on June 8, 2019 at 8:06 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8
Hey everyone!
We eloped on 10/10/18 in our backyard. Really couldn’t wait to just be husband and wife and financially it was a better decision. Here’s the thing, I still want some sort of celebration! Originally the plan was to have a big wedding in 10/10/20, however, financially we’re still in a bind (two kids under 5 in daycare 🤦🏽‍♀️) so it likely won’t play out that way. I read up on a reception only type of thing, but I’m not sure how to implement it! Do we do a small vow renewal for our family then a party afterwards? What do we wear? I’m so confused! Any tips or advice would be helpful!

It's up to you whether or not you want to renew your vows or just throw a celebration. I personally would renew them because it would seem odd to me to just have a celebration for something that happened 2 years prior. You can choose to wear whatever suits your event. As casual or as formal as you want. Some people throw huge vow renewals to make up for the wedding they didn't get to have, white dress, wedding cake, the whole 9 yards. You could choose to wear a more casual, but still bridal feeling dress, or even jeans and a t-shirt. Make it what you want.

You’re right it doesn’t make sense to not renew vows, people will really be like why wait 2 years for a party lol! Plus I filled out my marriage license wrong in all the excitement, so can’t even change my last name 🤦🏽‍♀️ So we would have to redo that part anyway! I’m thinking just close family and friends, originally in planning a wedding we were up to 150 people! Thank you for your input! 🤗

I think you can do something super casual and fun. Receptions are really just a party and so it's however you want it to be that fits in your budget.

I think guests would love to see a vow renewal! Then you can all celebrate together at the reception!

Sure. It was just a very open thing. Dinner. Come and go. Keg, sodas, cake cutting, there was a sound system playing music but no one really danced.
The thing was super casual. And 5 hours long. It ended at 8.
Not unsimilar to a graduation party.

I think it's completely up to you how you want to do it.

I'm in this exact situation. My hubby and I got married last Sept 28th. NO ONE was there. He proposed and then decided he didn't want to wait an entire year to get married, so we got married on our two year anniversary (which happened to fall on a Friday). We decided we'd do a "wedding" for our family and a few friends a year later. So, for them, it's vow renewal. We're still doing the whole reception thing. It's just not going to be a formal, big huge thing. I'm still wearing a wedding dress. He is still wearing a linen suit (we're getting married on the beach), we still have a small wedding party. We still mailed out wedding invites.

We have the same JOP who married us last year, our reception starts at 7p and ends at midnight. We have a cake/cupcake tower, we will have a first dance, we will have a sweetheart table. But that is it for traditions for us. That's just how we are choosing to do it. I can't wait to celebrate with our family and friends and they are excited as well.
