Reception hall rescheduling!

Marisa, on May 26, 2020 at 11:24 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 6
Hi all! I wanted to know what others reception halls are doing for postponing. Our reception hall let us hold a “soft date”. However, they only had 4 Saturday dates available for all of next summer. We have to do it between May-August because our ceremony venue is only available that time.

Just our luck, those 4 dates are conflicted by other weddings we are standing up in. At this point I rather hold my reception else where, but we’d loose our $5k deposit. Has anyone had a similar experience or had any luck getting their deposit back? They have already sent out a mass email to their brides saying they won’t refund the deposit, but that seems ridiculous to me. If it was normal circumstance, I wouldn’t have picked those dates so why am I being penalized for not wanting them now? Thanks!

You first need to look at your contract. Does it say anything about force majeure?
Do you have to postpone now because your venue is making you postpone due to state regulations? Or are you deciding to postpone?

It really depends on what your contract says. Are they requiring you to reschedule? If you are electing to postpone your wedding and they are letting you do that without a penalty (even though the four dates they suggested do not work for you), that sounds reasonable to me. If you choose to all-out cancel, I can see where they may dig in their heels if the contract supports it. Have you asked them about a Friday or Sunday wedding next year instead? That is becoming more and more common - especially with everything going on right now - and they are sometimes less expensive as well. I hope you find a solution that you are happy with!

It does not say anything about force majeure. Our contract is super vague and just says you won’t get your deposit back if we cancel. As of now our venue is making us pick a soft date because we live in MI and things are opening VERY slowly. By September we are thinking we’ll be allowed 50 people, which is not what we want. I know technically they are going to say “you decided to not have 50 people” but is there a way around that?

Thanks for the advice! We deff have thought of a Friday wedding, however we have a TON of out of town guests, including ourselves! we are from Michigan but live in Chicago so Saturday is ideal. I think at this point I rather have a Friday wedding than a date I hate.

Ooof, this is a hard one. I'd keep talking to them about what exactly your contract was supposed to say - was it for a certain number of people? Because if you are limited to 50, but you were contracted for 100, then they can't fulfill that.

But, as others have said, it might be best to look for an 'off day' just in case.

I would look at a Friday night wedding or twilight Sunday (not ideal) but I personally would rather a Friday then a date i couldn't commit to forcing me to lose 5K.
