Reception Food: Classy Cocktail Hour All Night Long

Hannah, on July 29, 2019 at 1:19 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 12
Hi everyone!

My FH and I are going a very non-traditional route with our wedding ceremony and reception, but we still want to make sure our guests are still comfortable. Right now, we have a venue booked for 4 hours that has tables, chairs, linens included in the price, but we will pay separate for food and drinks that are catered on-site. We will probably opt for their least expensive option of beer, wine, soft drinks, and coffee bar for beverage options. However, for food, I just want to make sure no one is left hungry. My FH thinks that more of an "elevated appetizer" sort of night could still leave everyone plenty satisfied and not terribly wasted (he also has former kitchen experience and I trust his judgment). I just hope people will be able to stick it out to dance/party with this sort of food layout (instead of a buffet or seated dinner, which really adds up). We are working closely with the caterer for the venue, and he seems to be on board as well.

My question is merely this: Has anyone else done something like this before, or are planning on it as well? We may decide to go with a buffet, but we are REALLY going the frugal route here.

Heavy appetizer receptions are never the most frugal route. Finger foods are more labor intensive and will almost always end up being more expensive than a buffet or plated dinner if you have enough to constitute a full meal.

I agree! I know of several brides who went the heavy appetizer route and it ended up costing more than an actual dinner

I also agree. By the time you order enough heavy apps to make sure everyone gets enough food, you probably will pay as much or more than a simple buffet.

I looked into it, enough finger food for the night and a buffet are the same cost. Also an appitizer based wedding is often short so people might leave after two hours thinking it's a shorter wedding.

We are doing this and feel extremely confident after going over the menu with our caterer. Having said that, he is a close friend's son so we're not getting gouged. We have a plan to have typical trays and platters while we have pictures done with family, then the first round (5-6 different types) of heavy appetizers will come out after we return and greet everyone. Roughly an hour to an hour and a half later we will have a second round of apps presented. We are forgoing the big cake but will have plenty of cupcakes in 4 different flavors and various dessert bars and brownies. The most important part for us was the timing and making sure several of the apps felt like filling foods. Our ceremony begins at 2pm so people will have eaten lunch and it is stated clearly on our wedding website that the reception will be cocktail party style. We are also expecting less than 50 people and I think any more would have required a sit down dinner. Whatever you choose, good luck!

My sister did this and it went over great. They had traditional cocktail hour, then when everyone moved over to the reception room, they did all the speeches and dances and then had stations around the room for food. I can’t recall if the dj announced tables, but it went smoothly.

Depends on the timing. If it's around dinner time your guests will expect a meal. Most appetizers are also sometimes difficult to acommodate. Plus from what I've seen they look more expensive and you'll have to pay more for service because it'll be more than just meal time.

As long as there is food rotating for a few hours, you should be fine!

Solid! They have a few different options, 4-6 types of apps over 4 hours. I think you're right! just depends on price, 4 types of apps are $18/person, 6 is $23/person; it just all adds up, and way too fast haha. We may be scaling back our guest list a bit.

I looked into it and it definitely is actually quite expensive compared to if say you did taco catering. A lot of places also charge it as per person costs and that could be almost as much as cheaper catering options. However I don't necessarily think it's a bad idea if you want a shorter reception time and it's at a time of day that wouldn't necessarily be dinner.
