Reception Dress- Yay or Nay?

Victoria, on November 20, 2020 at 2:46 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

I have been debating this in my head for a while...my wedding gown is AMAZING but I know it will be uncomfortable to wear all night. Is having a second dress for the reception still a thing or is it now outdated and "extra"? Lol.

Also- I'd like to hear from brides that went with a reception dress- was it worth it or did you feel it was an unnecessary expense?

Did anyone feel that they didn't get their money's worth out of their ceremony dress because it wasn't worn all night?

Thanks!

I don't think its outdated or extra at all. I originally always wanted a reception dress. But I changed my mind because I definitely wanna get my "wear" out of my wedding dress so I decided against it. I didn't want to spend as much money as I did on my wedding dress to wear it for only an hour. But if that doesn't matter to you, then go for the reception dress!

I personally want to wear my one dress all night - if I'm spending money on it and only get to wear it once, I definitely want to wear it for as long as I can. However, I think it's a personal decision, and there's no wrong answer! Some people are torn between two dresses, so they wear one for ceremony and the other for reception. Or in your case, switching to a more comfortable dress for the reception. Are there any alterations that can be made to your current dress that would make it more comfortable for the reception? Such as, a detachable skirt to convert it from one style to another? Otherwise, if you want to go with two dresses, and it's in your budget, I say go for it!

Not outdated or extra! Many brides do this nowadays! My mom is wanting me to do this as well, but I know I won't get a mermaid or tight fitting wedding dress, so I'm not doing it. I also don't want to spend the money on a second dress lol.

If cost is the issue, there's plenty of online retailers that have gorgeous options for a reception dress! BHLDN has to be my favorite when it comes to a more 'relaxed but polished' bridal look. Lulu's and Show Me Your MuMu have great options as well!

It is definitely not outdated – I think brides are doing it more than ever! I hadn’t wanted a second dress, but I knew that the train on my dress was going to make it a pain in the butt for our after party, so I went ahead and got a second one. I think if you have a comfortable dress that works for both the ceremony and reception, then you should keep it on all night and get your moneys worth! However, if your ceremony dress is going to be uncomfortable and prevent you from enjoying your time at your reception, then go for the second dress!

I, personally, could not spend seversl hundreds to thousands of dollars only to wear a dress once, especially not all day. Therefore, I wouldn't get a reception dress. But if yoi can afford it without going into debt, then go for it.

I want/wanted to wear my dress all day but my fiancé and I like to dance and I wouldn't be able to in my big dress. I'm contemplating changing back, lol! It really depends on your dress and what you need to be able to do in it.

I love the idea of a reception dress because if your wedding gown is heavy or long, it works out to change into something lighter, etc.

but i didn't end up doing it because i realize you already aren't in your wedding dress for that long so might as well be in it for as long as you can

I chose to stay in my wedding gown all night. I loved my dress so much and paid a pretty penny for it. I wanted to wear it for as long as possible! You only get to wear a wedding gown once (hopefully), so I wanted to savor it!

Ive only heard of this done in Asian cultures. Personally I wouldn't want to pay alot of money for a dress to only wear it an hour tops and cut into reception time by changing when you only get married once.
