Reception dinner choices

Figgy, on May 30, 2022 at 9:50 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8
My fiancé and I are at impasse over dinner choices for our reception. They offer a duet plate (in which we’d pick salmon and filet mignon) and two veg options for a plated dinner. For buffet they offer two proteins such as chicken or fish.

So essentially you get less of a choice for the duet plate, since you’re getting two proteins on one plate regardless. My opinion is that it seems more premium, and it’s also what I want to eat.
My fiancé is quite hung up that people won’t get a choice of protein, but my issue with the buffet is that the options are less appealing. We can’t have a red meat unless we pay for an add on carving station, and I’m personally not super into the idea of a buffet. I’ve certainly enjoyed them at other weddings, but I don’t love the options that our venue offers.
I strongly feel we should go with the duet plate surf and turf and he’s scared to not give ppl a choice. Am I off base for thinking it’s not that big a deal to just give ppl a plate with two proteins?

Duet plates are super common and I’ve found people are usually pleased with at least one of the choices and happy to swap with a tablemate.
I will say I’ve never seen salmon and filet as duet companions—it feels like a bit of a mismatch flavor profile wise and I’m not quite sure why??

I feel like this could really be a gamble. You're going to have guests who like both salmon and filet mignon, guests who like one or the other, or guests who like neither one. For guests that only like one or don't like either option you'd be throwing your money way to serve them a dish they don't like. Whereas with a buffet they have a choice of what they are being served and don't have to take food they would otherwise not want.

I feel like the duet plate isn't the best option. There are plenty of people who either don't like fish or eat red meat. I agree that plated meals seem nicer than buffets. Is there a way to do a plated dinner with the guests choosing just one protein as an option? That is usually the standard.

I eat everything so i’ve always enjoyed duet plates. However, I know some people would be turned off to have fish on the same plate as their meat. I second the suggestion to do a plated dinner where everyone chooses one entree.

I do not eat fish or red meat (only poultry and pork) so I would give duet plate to my husband and take his vegetables. I get that you can't please everyone, but maybe if possible, you may want to see if caterer has a vegetarian option.

Fish is very polarizing. Also depending on the type, there is potential for food allergies. You also run the risk of food going to waste if guests don’t like the choices and they go hungry, which combined with alcohol is a bad combination. Ask your family and friends what they prefer since they will be eating it.

If you're doing a duet plate I would steer clear of fish since it is so up in the air as to whether someone will even touch it. I'd stick with something safer like a chicken option, even pork gets a little hairy sometimes. Either way, I think the duet plate is the best option. Just make sure to have at least one veggie option available.

Is there going to be a full vegetarian option? I'd be a little concerned about people with certain allergies or dietary restrictions not being able to have a meal, particularly if all the sides will be touching the protein options and cross-contamination would be an issue. It's pretty much impossible to please everyone, but offering choices can at least please a greater amount. If the duet plate is the only option you can have for a plated meal, I'd go with the buffet option.
