Reception costs

Amina, on September 26, 2019 at 11:06 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10
So my venue has all inclusive costs per person by age, which really means the actual cost of their meal plus if they’re old enough for the open bar. I have quite a few friends and family who don’t drink at all. Would it be wrong for me to list them as a young adult (venue categorizes them as above 12 but younger than 21) to save money on people using the open bar that I know won’t be drinking alcohol at all? Currently over 21 prices is $100.50 and young adult price is $40 so I would be essentially saving $60 for every adult who I know doesn’t drink

Sounds like something you should ask your venue. I wouldn't knowingly violate my contract to save money.

I actually had several people that don’t drink at all but were adults so my venue gave me a discount on those people but not the kid price. I would definitely ask

Yea i think that might not be a good idea to list them as young adults like that without letting your venue know

I wouldn't lie to your venue, and risk them fining you for that. Our venue allowed us to classify people as "non drinking adults" and we had about 6 of them so that saved us some money.

Yeah, you should ask the venue. When we were discussing alcohol packages my venue didn't care that half my guests over 21 don't drink at all and wanted to charge for each of them.

It would become VERY clear VERY quickly to the venue, so you can’t really pull a fast one on the venue when they see X number of adults and were only paid for Y number of adults. Your best bet is an open conversation with the venue to see if/what options are— maybe they’ll be willing to work something out, maybe they won’t, but I guarantee it will be an issue if you just try to list a bunch of obvious adults as under 21s.

See if the caterer can work a discount on those not drinking alcohol, but I don't suggest marking them down as under 21. I know that for my venue we are charged an alcohol and drink fee for everybody (including kids) so caterers usually aren't too flexible with things like that but still check before possibly violating the contract.

I would definitely ask the venue! you don't want to hide that and then they realize and slam you with a bill due after the reception.

Our venues did including pricing and allowed us to list "non-drinking adults" for the same price as people under $21. It was $50ish versus $90ish, so it was a big difference, especially since we had several pregnant guests and a handful of guests that are sober.

Daughter's venue specifically did NOT allow this. Even those under 21, but over 12 (the cut-off for the kid's meal) were charged at the price that included the full bar package. I would talk with your venue and then follow whatever guidelines they give you. Lying to your venue is a good way to be in breach of contract and get yourself in all kinds of trouble.
