Really frustrated with Kay Jewelers right now

Miranda, on April 26, 2017 at 6:12 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20

I just need to rant right now. I'm so frustrated. So my engagement ring was originally an 8. I took my ring in to get my engagement band and my wedding bands soldered together and they recommended I size up a bit because a thicker ring will fit tighter. So I ordered a 8.25. When the 8.25 comes in it is so tight my finger turned red and I could barely get it off. So the lady says I need to order an 8.5. So okay I order an 8.5. So today the 8.5 comes in and it is so loose it is literally falling off my finger. I'm so mad at this point I start tearing up. The manager comes over and sizes me and goes "you definitely need an 8, or to be safe we could order a 8.25". Are you fucking joking? Last week your 8.25 was so tight I could barely get it on. How does 1/4 a size make that big of a difference? They checked the size of the 8.5 ring and it is accurate, which I believe since it is loose and I wear an 8 normally. But I bet no one checked the 8.25 and it wasn't accurate. Ugh

Sorry that was so long. Rant over. Now I'm scared to let them size it down because my wedding is so close. Anyone else have experiences like this at kays? Or any recommendations?

I am sorry, you have to be really pissed at this point. At least you have time to get this taken care of appropriately.

I seriously am like how should I size it? Should I go down to a 8.25 even though like ten days ago their 8.25 didn't fit me? Ugh. I'm just so mad at them. I'm afraid if i change it that it will be too tight my wedding day. Or should I leave it and have it be loose? Blaggh. Congratulations to Kay jewelers to be the first wedding thing to actually stress me out.

I would have them check the ring size in front of you each time. I had them do so at Zales. Im sorry that it's been so frustrating for you Smiley sad

I would insist on trying on their sizers with your engagement ring to make sure the 8.25 will fit.

So sorry to hear you're dealing with that! If nothing else, they have temporary ring sizing pieces that they can put on your ring. It doesn't damage it at all, and is easily added or removed. That could be a possibility if you're in a pinch and worried about getting it back in time.

I had the same issue with Kay! My wedding band was sized to an 8 and it was a little tight so I got is sized to a 8.5 and it was huge then they tried to tell me I needed a 9....in what galaxy would a 9 fit if an 8.5 was to big? Needless to say we sized it to 8.5 and I walked away with the hopes I never have to go back there

We did not go through Kay. We had heard several issues with them so went though kesselers. Anyways my engagement ring was a 9 (yep I have fat fingers!). Anyways we bought both wedding bands. (We surrounded my engagement ring with gold bands). My ring size went up to a 10 when we put all three rings together. My ring then fit perfectly when I got it back and they had soldered it together. It doesn't really make sense that one day the initial size doesn't fit. You order the bigger size and now that's too big. That just doesn't seem right. But what I will tell you is you do have time yet. Not a ton but you do have time. It will be right but it just might be a little more stressful then we all would like. Sorry this is happening!!!

This is why I won't shop at Kay Jewelers (aside from all the sexual harassment cases against them). These big chain stores are so inconsistent and it drives me crazy. Have you already paid for the ring? If not, I would take my money elsewhere.

I never hear anything but complaints coming from jewelry stores like Kay's. I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. Hopefully they fix it and don't mess anything else up

Yes I have paid for the ring. The resizing is free but it still ticks me off! Thanks everybody. I really might do the temporary fix until after the wedding. Because they say if they resize it that it will be back by May 11th and if they mess it up again and make it too small there won't be time to fix it. Ugh.

When I said it was too big and the lady goes "we could size it back down to a 8.25" I got sooo mad. I felt like Sheldon when he tries to make people's heads explode with his mind. Lol

I tried thinking about that! But I really have no idea what I ate that day. I don't remember. It still seemed like a drastic jump. I had days when my engagement ring was tighter but I could still wear it.

Wow, that is terrible. I'd take my business elsewhere unless they are fixing the size issues at no cost to you. Even then I'd still consider going somewhere else. Have they been charging you or offering you any sort of compensation for their mistake in the sizing?

My fingers fluctuate in size depending on the time if the month, or if I've eaten something by salty. Could that have been it?

Can you ask them to put a sizing bead inside the ring? If your finger swells again the bead will accommodate that.

Yes- had the same issue and at kay! We had to go back and forth a few times before it was right- my band wraps so the engagement ring had to be bigger-

I have issues with ring sizes because my fingers swell so much. I go from a size 9 to 10.

Tbh my finger is a 7. They told me to get a 7.5 in wedding bands. Sometimes when I do a lot of walking or when it gets hot my fingers swell. Sometimes my engagement ring is loose sometimes its tight. Sometimes I retain water sometimes I don't. Not saying Kay isn't at fault but remember that sometimes your finger will swell

Are you able to take your ring somewhere else to be worked on? DH and I had a horrible experience with Kay, wow we found a local jeweler to work on our rings. I have zero complaints with the local store. They've been wonderful to work with and have the best customer service.

I agree with PPs that sometimes the fingers swell. I had mine sized down to a 5 and that was just perfect. Sometimes it's a little tighter on my finger and other times, the stone turns to the side. It'll be difference once I put on the band but I know my fingers swell up. Luckily you still have time to get it resized if you want.
