Real vs Silk flowers

Kenia, on December 8, 2020 at 1:25 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 13
Hello,
I thought I was set on real flowers. However I can’t get estimates for flowers until close to my wedding (April 16, 2021). I have been looking at silk flowers and I can’t even tell in pictures they are fake. Anybody have suggestions or ideas?

I opted out of real flowers because I personally think they are a waste of money. But I am like this with real flowers in general, I had to tell my husband to stop sending me roses for every occasion since they just die lol. For our minimony we used artificial flowers and we are using artificial flowers for our big wedding as well. We purchased them from Amazon.

Do you want to keep your flowers? Many brides don't and real flowers are biodegradable while silk/foam is not. You can get real flowers very inexpensively at fiftyflowers.com cheaper than most silks. Some silks look obviously artificial in pictures and others don't..but the realistic ones tend to be very expensive..even more than fresh whole exotics/out-of-season.

If you are going through a florist, keep looking because there is no reason they would not give you an estimate unless that is their way to say they are booked on your date. They can tell you how much bouquets/bouts/centerpieces will cost. Browse thumbtack.com if you need to.

Are you fine with not keeping your flowers? If so, I suggest renting them through Something Borrowed Blooms, this is what I did, and they looked so real in photos!! They use good quality silk flowers and don't look fake at all even in person. They are also waaay cheaper than real flowers since it's a rental service, and they also have decor for rent as well.

Here's a photo of the bouquet that I used.

I talked with a few florists, and to do everything I wanted, they wanted 4000. For one day?? I just couldn't justify that..

So instead I'm going with real flowers for my bouquet and boutonnieres, but silk flowers for my centerpieces/anything else.

Here's a pic of my centerpieces I created with an assortment of different silk flowers:

My total for all flowers (including some of the real ones used) was only 1600 instead of 4k Smiley smile

This is exactly what we are doing. Real flowers for bouquets, silk flowers for centerpieces, and petals on the table for arms reach.

The quality of silk flowers vary immensely – I’ve seen some which look fake from a mile away, others which are so beautiful and well done that you wouldn’t guess it unless you are right up close to them. I would not rely on photographs only because what you see vs what you may get may be very different. I would find a stockist of silk flowers in advance to see whether you like them or not before making the decision.

Also, any good florist should be able to give you a price estimate in advance so I am not sure why you have been told 5 months out that this is not possible. I booked my florist in November 2019 for my December 2020 wedding (now postponed) and she straight away was able to confirm what flowers should be in season, the prices I would be up for (approximately) and the type of extras we would be looking at (i.e. if I want quicksand roses, add $X, if I want peonies, expect to pay around $Y extra).

I opted out of flowers for decor, and the minimal stems I used I bought for $5 a stem from Kroger (hydrangeas, so each stem was pretty big). I used candles on the guests tables.
I used a florist for my bouquet, my husband’s boutonnière, and parent florals. I just didn’t want to chance my bouquet coming out badly if I DIYd.
I made all bridal party flowers with flowers from Kroger. And honestly I should have made everything. I spent $500 on florals I think. I think fakes look fake. At least the ones I’ve seen do. As others have said even fakes can be costly for the good ones. Real flowers can be done within budget if you’re willing to think outside the box and DIY.

Fake flowers were not even a consideration for us. To me, fake flowers look cheap and I can always tell in photos when someone uses fake flowers. I just think real flowers are so much prettier.

My husband and I opted to do real-looking fake flowers at our wedding. Neither of us really like flowers so we could't see ourselves spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on something we don't like. I made my bridesmaids and I's bouquets and my mom make our centerpieces. No one could tell they were fake unless they touched them.

I’m thinking about doing the Sola wood flowers. I have a very creative friend who is chomping at the bit to do it with me.
