Reading Your Vow

Belle, on March 20, 2020 at 12:56 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 15
I thought writing a vow was hard, try reading it without crying and getting choked up IS quite a challenge for me. I can’t read past a couple sentences without crying and looking ugly 🙄

How do I read this and not looking ugly???
Suggestions please....

Haha, if it makes you feel any better, I cried SO MANY TIMES while thinking about walking down the aisle and while writing my vows and while rehearsing my vows. But the day of the wedding I was honestly just in shock so I didn’t. I was just shaking and smiling the entire time walking down the aisle, and while reading my vows I got choked up a couple times and definitely welled up, but I didn’t “cry.” And again that was super unexpected because like I said, I cried so many times rehearsing it and thinking about it? Lol. My husband on the other hand was full on weeping for most of our ceremony hahaha. But it was really, really sweet. So many people said our ceremony made THEM cry because we (especially him lol) were so openly emotional and clearly very much in love. I wouldn’t worry too much about crying or getting choked up unless you’re literally unable to get through reading it.

I agree with Gen that you shouldn’t worry too much about it. Crying is so normal and no one will mind so unless you can’t get through it, let the tears come.

Thank you. It is natural to be emotional during the ceremony. I just afraid to look ugly and mess up my make up in the already humid weather.

Yes, I do tear up when I am listening to the backgroud music I am choosing for the ceremony, imagining the day he saw me in the dress, walking down the isle, reading the vow, etc.
I just added “tissue” to my list. Maybe I should ask him to put it inside his pockets? Because my dress have no pockets.

Practice a lot? Maybe add something funny in the middle to lighten your mood up and hold the tears at bay a bit?

I just finished my first draft and had to put some silly/funny in there so I can get through it. Knowing my FH, I'll probably cry at his (he's a really good poet and writer, and has made me cry with his writing more than once), so I decided to keep mine on the silly side with bits of seriousness sprinkled in.

If it helps, this is the rough draft I just finished for mine. I took bits & pieces of various writings I found via google searches for funny vows and made them unique to us.

I, Katt, choose you, Alex, to be my husband, my friend and lover, my companion in *adventure, and my instigator of **"Sheehanigans".

I promise to love you faithfully and to cherish you through every obstacle that may come.

I promise to let you "win" our silly arguments - once in a while - and to always be looking for our next adventure to share.

I vow to tell you "I love you" at least once every day, and to seal it with a kiss.

I vow to share memes with you and to look for puns or wordplay to make you laugh.

I promise to lend you my strength and support as you reach for your dreams.

I can't promise not to bring home any more cats, but I do vow to give you my love, my trust, my heart and my soul for as long as we both shall live.

*we talk about our adventures together a lot, and one of our favors for guests includes a tag that says "the adventure begins"

**this is a play on words with his last name since we both love word play and puns

I like the idea of practicing a lot. I read mine so many times but I know my voice still cracked as I read them

Another reason why I wanted a small destination wedding....not a lot of people to see my ugly cry!!! My sweetheart also said he would be crying happy tears too. We’ll both be blubbering fools 😂. Just practice and all should be fine. And congratulations!!!

Girl, me too!! Honestly, if you're an emotional crier like me, then there's probably nothing that can help us! lol I love seeing people be emotional during weddings though, it's super sweet. I wouldn't worry about it too much, just shows how in love you are! Smiley smile although I totally am with you on not wanting to be ugly crying in front of everyone lol I'm going to throw some funny line in my vows to lighten the mood. My biggest worry is how shaky I'm gonna be ugh!

I am doing a beach destination wedding too, just with our adults kids and our 8 yo (bonus kid). But I am afraid to look bad in pictures and ruin my make up 🤣

I don't want to ugly cry either! I cry just thinking about walking down the aisle too! My FH thinks he won't cry at all. I tell him he'll be the biggest baby out of us two. So it's a challenge now!

I will have extra makeup so when we take pictures it looks like perfection

Girl at least you have your vows written. I literally can't even think of what to say in mine and the whole 'from the heart' thing is a joke. All I know is we are planning on doing our written ones then incorporating the vows from Corpse Bride after.

Most women will cry on their wedding day. If you're still worried about this, you might want to avoid the trigger of crying, which it sounds like personal vows could potentially be for you. Many officiants are trained in different kinds of vows from different traditions. Some are pretty interesting, such as Irish handfasting.
