Readers at the Rehearsal?

Maltese, on April 10, 2015 at 12:30 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

It may be a stupid question....and I get that everyone involved in the wedding should be invited to attend, but......do they have to be there? One of ours is out of state and may not be in town at that time and the other is super busy. It wouldn't offend or upset me if neither could attend but are they missing out on pertinent information and are the readings gone through at a rehearsal?

I was a reader for a cousin and it really helped me to be at the rehearsal. It allowed me to get used to the microphone set up as well as understand how my voice would sound/amplify/echo in the church (I didn't have a copy of "my" reading so the priest just had me read a passage from the Bible and then I practiced reading "my" reading at home).

I was going to say a detailed itinerary of order of events should suffice if they can't make it. Theresa makes a good point, though. Either way, it's nice to include them by inviting them to rehearsal and dinner.

You're having a Catholic wedding, right? Are your readers also Catholic so they know the general flow of the ceremony? Usually priests do a pretty good job of signaling the readers and you could have your church coordinator run through whatever they need to know immediately before the ceremony. I don't think it's necessary that they attend the rehearsal but it could help!

We didn't have them (they live in the Shores, after all!) but everyone got a copy of their reading a week or two ahead of time.

Our priest was great about talking to them before the mass.

It will be great Smiley smile

Else Miss Kimberly and I will wing it!

I would try to have them there. I'm not too concerned about ours because they are both part of the Catholic church so they understand the order of the mass and when they will do it. However; I think that if they are able to get to the church early, before guests arrive, they can practice.

Like most parts of the rehearsal, all readers do at the rehearsal is walk through the motions. Whoever is running the rehearsal will tell the reader "this is when you come up" and the reader might actually walk up to the microphone and then walk back. It's not super necessary, just make sure you have someone responsible for filling your reader in on the exact details. And maybe to give them a nudge when it's time to go up.

I'm hoping both of our aunts are able to make it in, but one may not be in until the wedding day. I would think it would be helpful to have them there though!

Side question - I got sick of looking through the pages for your thread on your trial. You said you had extensions on....what were they like? Clip in, put on some other way?? I know nothing about extensions, but want my hair really curly and will be wearing it down. I thought maybe doing some pre curled extensions might help that. Will the ones you had just be for the day of the wedding?? I may be wrong, but I think there are ones that are put on for a super long time??

    @Jillian:

    https://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/hairmake-up-trial/3ef43ce78e298d73.html

The ones I had on were clip in....I got a full set at Sally's for $150 or so...they weren't curled, but she was able to that (has to be 100% human hair, the synthetic can melt under the heat of the iron). there's a photo of them just curled towards the end of the thread.

They ARE the ones I will be wearing for the wedding day, I clipped them together with a hair clip after taking them out and put them in a pillowcase....she told me not to wash them as it wasn't needed since I wasn't leaving them in after the trial. I did look into getting extensions sewn in, but they can do some damage on your hair and in the end this served the purpose. I totally recommend them...the volume they gave my hair was unreal!

    Thank you :o)

Found them on Sallys website and called my salon to confirm that they would work with them and they said absolutely since the only ones they offer last up to 6 months, which I do not need or want!

If they can make it, great; if not, it's fine too. Your officiant should invite them by name to the mic, have a copy of their readings so they don't have to worry about having it.

We asked our readers to plan to be at the rehearsal. We want to do a full run through of the ceremony.

I'm inviting my readers bc I want everyone to feel comfortable and know what to do. If they can't come, they can't come but yes they should be invited.

We invited our reader and her S/O to the rehearsal and the dinner. It was extremely helpful so she knew where to stand and at what time during the ceremony her reading was taking place. I'd invite your reader and if she's unable to come that's on her, but you should extend the invitation.

Yes Celia, a full run through. Our ceremony is long. Everyone needs to know where to stand, they will get the reading at the rehearsal so they can go over it. Everyone is not comfortable speaking in public. During the rehearsal they actually see the entire Sanctuary and will have the opportunity to do the reading.

Yikes. If they are not comfortable then why do it? I mean I may be playing devils advocate but you're going to make them go through a long ceremony twice? I honestly have never heard of this. They walk they stand they stay in place. They can see the sanctuary that day and frAnkly, if they aren't public speakers to begin with, they should have the reading before the rehearsal: that is very nerve wracking even for a pro.. Give them the readings ahead of the wedding. Let them practice at home and then they get to the mic and read. One visit to the sanctuary and the mic will not change their basic talent or lack thereof..

I just think it's expecting a lot of everyone. The reason that I don't do rehearsals is that we have everything very in place way before that

Celia, I understand this is not the norm for most people, and I appreciate your suggestion, but this is how we decided to handle our rehearsal dinner. Most people don't have them or when they do, it's very quick and informal. When we asked our bridal party, ushers and readers to be a part of our day, we let them know up we would have a rehearsal and would do a run through. No one complained and everyone agreed to be there. Our readers are not people who do public speaking for a living or on a regular basis.

Also, and more importantly, we want them to know that we appreciate what they're doing and don't want them to just show up talk in the mic.

On the rare occasions that I do a rehearsal, I hit the highlights -- where someone has to say or do something. But, we don't do the vows, we pretend to put on the rings (so I can make sure they know their right from their left hands).

I'll say, "Here is where I'll talk about marriage" etc.

If there are readers, I have them run through their readings.
