Re-size ring? Get a ring guard?

CoffeeNColor, on September 15, 2016 at 12:01 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 23

Any advice as to what is a good guideline for resizing the engagement ring versus getting an insert/guard/clasp to attach to the ring. My ring has started to feel looser towards the end of the day.

I take my jewelry off when I work out, so I'm worried about making the ring too snug. I'm also worried that if I gain weight, the ring will be too tight.

Thanks!

My weight fluctuates and I bloat at morning and night. I will be getting a half size up from my true size for my comfort. It will still be snug enough to be safe too.

You could always get sizing beads put in. I got mine for a similar reason plus my ring spins which drives me crazy. It cost about $40 to get them put in at a jeweler.

I would maybe think about getting your ring resized! Our fingers are more bloated in the summer, so the ring will be even looser in the winter. If you feel like your weight or ring size fluctuates too much or just don't want to commit to re-sizing it yet then definitely look into the ring guards / sizing beads, etc!

I'd ask a jeweler. It really depends on how the ring fits and what the issue is as to whether resizing versus something else will work best for your.

I second the sizing bead idea. I got them on my ring because I was constantly scared it would fall off but in the summer when it's hot and humid my fingers really swell. So I knew I definitely didn't want to have it permanently resized. They had me try a sizing band first but I personally thought it was really ugly. Plus it made the ring way too snug anyway (took a good 5 minutes to pry it off my finger). Final option was sizing beads, which I'm so glad I did. They keep it from spinning for the most part and it's snug to get around my knuckle so I'm not worried it'll fall off. Here's a picture of my ring with the beads so you can see what it looks like:

I plan to get my wedding band a half size smaller than my engagement band, it'll be snugger but still able to accommodate swelling. And when placed in front of the engagement ring ( wedding band towards the knuckle not the hand) it will prevent eng. ring from sliding off.

Did you typically wear a ring before your e-ring? I ask because I wore a regular personal ring on my finger for a very long time thought weight fluctuation and all (apparently my fingers don't get bigger), so I just had my ring resized to match my other ring, since I had it since I was 14-15 and I'm now 25

I agree with the sizing beads. I just got 2 put in because my ring was loose and always spun on my finger. With the sizing beads it's a little snug sometimes (mostly in the AM or if I am dehydrated), but so much better than worrying about losing my ring!

Talk to your jeweler about sizing beads - they're little dots of metal put inside. Keeps it from sliding off/around, but still large enough that when fingers and knuckles swell, you don't have to size it back up.

Do NOT get a metal clasp or plastic guard. Either do the sizing bead or get it resized.

My FH got my size from a ring that I wear on my middle finger. At first I bought a plastic thing from wal-mart but it was very awkward and moved way to much. I Then I bought a metal one from ebay. and it really scratch up one of the sides and eventually broke stabbing my hand.

I got these from Amazon after seeing another WW user suggest them. My finger swell every so often, and then my ring doesn't spin, but then I get cold and my ring spins like crazy. These are easy to detach and I forget it's on a lot too.

Before getting mine sized I bought some silicone ring guards at Claire's. I think they cost like seven bucks and I got a bunch of different sizes in the pack.

The sizing bead wasn't an option for me... I got engaged in December and got it resized within a month or two. It was still too big so we waited until the weather turned. I used a ring guard for a while from the jeweler. My ring still turns but even when my hands swell up, I can take it off.

Keep in mind, if you have a band that will be soldered to your e-ring, it will fit snugger after the soldering because it effectively makes your band thicker in width. Wider/thicker bands in a size will fit snugger than a narrow band in the same size. I'd wait to do any permanent sizing until you have your complete wedding set.

Your fingers 'swell' overnight so it is normal for your ring to feel a little looser at night. It will also feel a little looser in the winter...i would go based on how it feels in general...do you feel like its loose most of the time? Or just for a few hours before bed? Is it loose enough its actually going to fall off?

I just got everything resized today.

    Went from a 7 to a 5.5 since January.

But I'm constantly taking mine off for work (nurse) and wearing gloves so I prefer snug.

I would stay away from a metal ring guard. They rip your clothes and snag your hair. I like the sizing beads idea. I got my ring in July and it fits a little loose now. I worry that it will be super loose come colder weather.

I actually make jewelry and I highly recommend the beads. Its easy for a jeweler to remove them later. Also, resizing can weaken the band.

Metal clasp or plastic guard can really damage the ring.

I've heard people say the sizing beads start bothering them/feeling uncomfortable after a while.

I ended up getting mine resized three times :/. You should take it to a trusted jeweler and see what they'd suggest!
