Questions about Honeymooning in Italy and receiving a Papal Blessing

Laura, on August 10, 2019 at 10:33 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 5
Has anyone done this before?
We’re getting married in January, but for legal and financial reasons we won’t be able to honeymoon for about a year. I’d like to use my fiancé’s vacation time (2 weeks) and mine if possible (unknown at the moment because I won’t start a full time job until after I graduate grad school in May).
I have lots of questions about the Papal Blessing. I know a few people who have done it, so I’m reaching out to them as well. I’m mostly concerned because we wouldn’t have the blessing right after our marriage.

Italy is a wonderful place to honeymoon! My husband and I did our honeymoon throughout Italy. We were able to visit Venice, Milan, Tuscany, Florence, the Amalfi Coast and Rome.

It looks like you can request by mail. https://thecatholictraveler.com/order-papal-blessing/ If you’re nervous about the timeliness (as it looks like they generally do this at the beginning of marriage and at anniversaries, though I am by no means familiar with the process), perhaps requesting by mail would make sense for you? That way when you visit on your honeymoon you can focus fully on experiencing everything else in Vatican City.

Or perhaps your church can help you navigate this?

    Hey Laura!

As Papal Blessing is a document awarded by the Vatican to honor important events in someone's life, this can be processed through your local church. You should contact your diocese’s Chancery Office or parish secretary for further information about this. As far as I understand, there is no fee but it is expected that you will make a donation.

A Papal Blessing cannot be issued for events that have already happened so if you want a Papel Blessing bestowed upon your marriage, this is the route you would have to take.

If you are visiting Rome and want to request a Papal Blessing from the Vatican, this could be done to honor your first wedding anniversary. If this is what you want to do, then you will need to bring all of the necessary documents with you to Italy and your Papal Blessing will be mailed to your home in the US.

Have you ever visited Italy before?

I’ve never visited Italy, however my family is from Spain and I have been several times to Spain.
I had a friend who received a Papal Blessing and she gave me the email of who to contact. I reached out to them and they said it’s flexible to 12 months. So I’m hoping that everything goes well. Unfortunately, every day some new immigration issue arises and that’s one of our biggest deterrents. I hope it works out!

I’ll ask my priest! I did reach out to those who handle visitors from US and they said that we could receive a free ticket to a papal audience and wear our wedding garments and receive a blessing from the Pope up to 12 months from our wedding date. They asked me to reach out again in 2020 (we are getting married in January)
