Question: Tulle repair, david’s bridal

Hannah, on May 24, 2025 at 6:30 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 2

It has officially been 5 years since my wedding, and subsequent 5 years of covid, family deaths, and most significantly: our apartment burning down a week after our wedding.

I’m FINALLY getting around to my wedding dress which has been what i thought was safely stored in my closet since then.
I took it down today and it has several small tears in the top layer of tulle right below the bodice, as well as a very large tear… (purple notebook in photos is 8 x 9“ for reference and contrast)
I still have my $150 prepaid cleaning and preserving kit from David’s Bridal, but I’m not sure if the “netting repairs” that cost extra will take care of the tulle and what the final cost would be…

Should i sell it damaged locally for cheaper due to repairs? Should i try to repair it, and how easy do you think it'll be and its expense?
Thank you for all tips! Pics included below!

Sorry to see that happening to your dress. One person had a high-end designer dress where the appliques had yellowed because of the glue -- which seems like a horrible construction of the dress.

you might check with a seamstress with possible clever use of additional appliques or of replacing the tulle layer. Maybe another option is to gather the material in some places where the holes are and then create a seam plus an applique. Maybe there are some flower or vine appliques that could be used in those locations.

It may be best just to repurpose the dress. Or if just having it packaged for memories, just have the bodice showing. Repairs might not be worth it.

Tulle is notorious for both tearing and deteriorating with age. I would talk with David's, show them everything and ask up front how much they would charge, and HOW they would repair it. There are too many tears for a simple reweaving or patching and just stitching the tears would look awful. As a sewist , I would advise finding someone who could replace the entire top layer of tulle. This would involve transferring the lace appliqués at the top, but altogether, this wouldn’t be a hard job at all!
