July2018bride, on March 28, 2017 at 9:17 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17

Why exactly does a bride wear one? And are you wearing one?

The garter toss developed ages ago, when it was considered lucky to grab a piece of a bride's dress. The garter toss was created to protect the bride from people grabbing at her, but to still offer an item of luck to the crowd.

You can wear one or not wear one for whatever reason you'd like. I am not planning on it, because we don't plan to do a toss, and wearing one doesn't appeal to me in general. There are many brides on here who aren't doing the toss but are wearing one to surprise their husband after the wedding.

I'm wearing one as my something blue, but we're not doing the garter toss. I like the tradition of something borrowed, old, new and blue

I have one my MOH bought for me that I will wear bc it makes my FH laugh lol. We will be tossing a separate one but he will have that one in his pocket and not climbing up my dress for it

Not doing anything garter-related (neither wearing nor tossing.) The toss is a big, gross "hell no," and wearing the thing is more of a "why would I do that?" Neither FH nor I thinks that a piece of frilly elastic is remotely sexy.

Thanks ladies I wanted everyone's opinion on how necessary it is. I've seen the climb up the dress move and its just not for us. Lol

We aren't doing a garter or bouquet toss and I am not going to wear a garter. I feel like they break up the party atmosphere, are awkward, and we want everyone dancing all night. Plus we won't have many single people there.

I am wearing one for the toss but that's it. I'll be surprising FH with one for our favorite baseball team.

In the 80's guys would hang the garter from their rear view mirror but that seemed to be the only point of them. Unless you are doing the toss I would skip it. There's nothing really sexy to me about FH taking a piece of fabric off my leg. Maybe it's a special private moment for some.

ETA- NO to climbing up the dress! I have never seen this! Yuck! Usually the bride pushes it to her knee and just barely lifts the dress up and the groom takes it off. It's nothing sexy or weird in my neck of the woods.

Like veeismeee said, the tradition behind the wedding garter was that owning a piece of the wedding dress would bring good luck - causing guests to start ripping pieces off the gown. To prevent this brides started wearing garters as a specific piece to be given to guests. It was also used as proof of consummation of the marriage.

I've actually never seen a garter toss at a wedding, and we opted to skip it!

I'm not wearing one or doing a toss. We don't find it necessary.

Well if we want to talk about the real purpose of a garter, it was to keep the brides stockings up before we had the modern miracle of spandex and non-slip materials. Then, as vee said, the garter toss became a thing so people wouldn't start ripping pieces off of the brides dress for good luck.

Now they are just worn as tradition and are completely pointless in my opinion.
