Question about welcome bags in a different country

purplekitten, on August 28, 2015 at 2:53 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 3

So as I'm putting together the things I want to order for the welcome bags for my wedding in Mexico, I'm starting to wonder: is customs or the TSA going to get upset that I have a suitcase full of two dozen of each of like half a dozen items? Are they going to think I'm trying to avoid paying international taxes or import fees or something?

Has anyone done welcome bags internationally? Did it work out okay? Is there anything special I need to do?

Oh - and shipping the stuff is prohibitively expensive. It would cost $50 to check an additional suitcase versus over $400 to ship the stuff.

You'll be okay. Did you book through a travel agency? We are also having a DW and our wedding planner says since we've booked most of the plane as a wedding group they know that our suitcases will have items most wouldn't really pack. Also, if you are up for it or have someone to go out for you (wedding planner or family) the Walmart is Mexico is SUPER cheap and some items we are waiting to purchase there. Good luck though!! I never thought putting together welcome bags was so damn hard!! Oh -- And expensive haha

Are you worried about TSA or Mexican customs? If Mexican customs, then just tell them it's favours for your wedding ("regalos para los invitados a mi boda"). Mexicans give tons of little gifts and props at weddings so they'll know what you mean. And that is only needed if they ask you to open your suitcase.

We did welcome bags for my moms vowel renewal in the Dominican Republic. The suitcase full of dozens of travel sized toiletries and such made it through with no issues at all. To make it easier for us when we got there, I put the contents of each bag into its own gallon zip lock bag. That way when we got there we just had to dump each package into the bag. It was a breeze. Obviously they had to be checked and not carried on since there were so many liquids and such. You will be fine Smiley smile
