Quality of Diamonds in Wedding Bands

ottawa2014, on November 4, 2013 at 11:20 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4

Hi Ladies. FH and I are looking to buy our wedding bands in the next little while. I don't want to spend more than $1000 on mine, and preferably less. However, I would like a band set with small diamonds (I have a solitaire engagement ring). My question is to ladies with diamond bands- what quality of diamonds did you get in your band? Most bands I have looked at so far (online only) come with diamonds that are I or SI, and a lower colour grade (around H, I, J).

Is this standard? Do bands with a lower quality grade still sparkle, especially when combined with the engagement ring? I'm considering going with a lower quality, in order to still have a diamond band in the price range I want. I just don't know if quality matters in a case like this, when the diamonds in the band would be small. Any ideas?

ETA Pictures. This sort of idea.

My e-ring is not huge, but great clarity and color. My matching band would have been $1700 and we just didn't have that right now. I ordered one from amazon for $200. The company was great and even sized and expedited shipping for free. I think it's around a SI and color is H. It fits great and matches my ring well, however, you can definitely tell the diamonds are not as clear and not nearly as white (and my diamonds are fairly small).

For $200, I'm not definitely not complaining, but I will be upgrading to my matching band one day!

When we went to look at wedding bands I found one that I loved at Kay's, which is where my e-ring is from. My dad's friend is a jeweler so I brought a picture and ID number from the Kay's ring and he told me that those diamonds were way lower quality than the ones in my e-ring. So he is making the same ring for me with better diamonds for the same price as Kays. He said the band would end up looking yellow-ish because of the lower qulaity. I would look around and maybe go to a local jeweler, they seem to have better prices.

Thanks ladies! We will be going back to the jeweler who did my ring, but I've been doing some photo research online so that I have some idea before we go. Good to know that the lower quality diamonds have a noticable colour difference. My ring is white gold and my diamond is colourless so it sounds like I'll have to be careful so that it matches. I can't wait to try on bands!

I ordered my bands on the weekend and had the full intention of upgrading to nearly flawless diamonds as that is what I have in my e-ring. The jeweller told me not to because anything in the G-J for color the eye cannot differentiate, so your all good there. I also wanted to go from the SI range to vvs, but again when the diamonds are small your eyes will never be able to see any of the inclusions, its only worth upgrading to vvs when it is a much larger stone! Good luck!
