Qualifying Event

I know I’m going to have to contact our insurances individually but I’m curious how everyone else handled this. County clerk states it can take up to 6 weeks to receive a marriage certificate but we only have 30 days after a qualifying event to switch over insurance plans. (I intended to drop mine and go onto my fiancé’s)

Will insurance plans just take the marriage license as proof? How did you all navigate this?

I believe, for us, we just need to state the intent to add our spouse to insurance within 30 days and then follow up with proof when we get it. That's what my HR told me anyway.

Contact HR right away. They will require proof, but the notification is the timely part. They can accept the license once you receive it.

I had trouble with my hr due to this and it was sort of dumb because I was opting out of employer paid insurance -_- and I had proof of my new insurance ! They just didn't like that I didn't do it within 30 days even though it wasn't possible for me to since I wasn't in the country due to my honeymoon . So I do suggest contacting your hr right away too

I'd contact HR. We didn't run into this because our marriage certificate came back to us before we even returned from our honeymoon. Our officiant filed the license that Monday and by Friday the certificate was in our mailbox. I know this isn't the case for everyone. But I'm pretty sure as long as you notify HR within 30 days that you are adding or dropping, then you're in the clear. Ask your department for specifics, though!

I’m going to speak with her. I was worried about getting a hard time so I want to get it out in the open before it becomes an issue.

Depending on where you live, your officiant might be able to bring the signed license into the courthouse/recorder's office and obtain your certificate that day. I did this for a wedding I officiated for a niece in Cook County, IL.

My husband added me onto his insurance right away, and it took effect on our wedding date. They asked for proof after and gave us 3 months to provide it.
