Putting together a playlist?

Andrea, on November 12, 2019 at 7:49 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 6

Hi everyone, my beloved Godfather is my DJ for my wedding, and I am so pumped. He's been a DJ for my entire life, and has done it for many events, so I'm pumped. But, I was wondering... in terms of quantity, how many songs are you guys putting together? How did you decide what is to be played? Are you sticking with certain genres? What is the number of songs you're going to have played, or are you not really counting? I'm thinking maybe 50-75 songs should be okay for me, no? And then they can just be replayed in a loop if need be. Any suggestions or thoughts is greatly appreciated!!

I've never heard of a DJ that makes you select your own playlist. Ours allows us to provide a list of must play songs and a list of do not play songs, but the reason we hired him is because that's his job; to select the music the crowd responds best to and keep the party going.

I think the different genres are a know your crowd thing. Ours will be mostly top 40's, hip hop, and a few slow country songs. 75 songs sounds sufficient. Most playlists provide a timer so that should help as long as you know how long your open dance floor time is.

We also provided our playlist because we wanted to listen to songs we wanted and not what the DJ wanted to play. It didn’t take long to make the list since he gave us something to start from.

Hey Cyndy, that's actually good he sort of helped you in the selection process. My godfather was pretty much like whatever songs we want to play, it's cool with him. SO fiance and I were like... how many songs should we actually play! Haha, maybe I'll call my godfather and see if he has any recommendations in terms of song. Our families are Caribbean so I'm sure a lot of reggae/soca will end up on our list. Thank you so much!!

We provided a list of songs we wanted for the big moments like the bridal party professional, my professional, the recessional, introductions, our first dance, father/daughter dance, mother/son dance, cake cutting, and our last dance. I also named a couple of songs I wanted to hear and we had one song on the do not playlist which was Benny and the Jets because my husband's name is Benjamin and he hates Benny as a nickname. Otherwise our DJ picked the rest of the songs played. That's why we hired him because it was his job to select the songs.

Very interesting, Veronica!! I guess because my godfather is the DJ we would just tell him what songs to play. Since he's family, you know? Thanks for your input!!
