Purpose of Wedding Websites?

Maggie, on August 19, 2015 at 9:24 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 18

Hi everyone, just wondering what the purpose is of having a wedding website? How are they different than just sending the members of your wedding party a text? Does it help you stay organized, or is it just one more thing to update and more of a hassle? My sisters and friends have been in weddings lately and they were all turned off by the idea of having to check the wedding website, saying it made the bride and groom too overbearing. But if its going to help me in the long run, should I make one? Just wondering what everyones opinions were on them!

It's for all guests. Invite space is limited, and unless you want to pay extra for 100 inserts it can be sometimes difficult to reach all guests. For example, my Save the Date just had the location, and my website www.nicknemily.com (check it out if you want an example). It included the hotel block, the plan for the week, the address of the venue, etc...

Our website isn't really for the bridal party? We have a lot of out of town guests coming to our website, and a few people who don't know both of us. So we have information about how we met, the proposal, some pictures, event information for the ceremony and reception...and then a list of blocked hotels, places to eat, and things to do. We didn't want our guests to feel like they had no clue what to do while they were here.

We needed one because this wedding is a weekend-long trip for most of our guests. Rather than texting 50 people, creating a website with all pertinent information seemed like the best choice. So far we've had nothing but positive feedback from ours. However, if it's unheard of in your region or circle of friends/family and your wedding is local to most guests, perhaps you don't need one.

Our wedding website is for all guests as we have a lot of out of town guests. We had an insert card with the information on it in our invitations. It includes directions to the venue (very rural venue), hotel suggestions, wedding events (ceremony, cocktail hour, reception, after-party), RSVP (option to RSVP rather than send in paper card), FAQS (level of formality, RSVP date, unplugged ceremony, camping at the after party, etc), and registry.

Our website has accommodation information, ideas of local things to do for out of town guests, the story of how we met (very short it's not so exciting for other people lol), and a short explanation of what to expect from the wedding/ceremony itself and our registry information. It can be useful if you have out of town guests or guests of various cultures attending a specific cultural wedding.

    Wedding website-

    1. Information about the couple where they met etc.

    2. Pictures of the couple (if you want, we did)

    3. Hotel information

    3. Ceremony and reception information and locations.

    4. Where you're registered.

    5. And for me.. a way for the guests to RSVP.

    We used it for...

    Hotel information...

    Event schedules

Registry info (cuz it's acceptable there but not on your invites)

Things to do in the area with your free time.

Wedding websites AREN'T for communicating with your wedding party. They're to communicate details and logistics with guests such as hotel accommodations, shuttle schedules, dress code, registry information, local attractions/restaurants for OOT guests, etc. that can't be included in a formal invitation either due to etiquette or space restriction. Especially today, most people can access that info from their phones so it makes it very convenient for guests. Personally, I like looking at wedding websites to read the info on the couples on how they met, their wedding party, etc. especially if I only really know the bride or the groom.

I used a private fb group to communicate with my bridesmaids rather than a mass text which worked out well!

@Kathryn you can purchase the domain name through GoDaddy right on the WW website maker. I don't remember how much it costs but it's less than $20 for a year. We did that, ours is www.jwedsk.com and we have it through October 2016.

Yupp the wedding website is all for the guests! Most of my guy friends are idiots and all lose or through out the STDs and invites, so they have to check the website to know all of the information! It's also a great place to give info on accommodations, and any other additional/optional activities you guys might have that weekend!

They are really helpful if you have a lot of out of town guests.... Even though I sent an e-mail Save the Date with the website on it, I'm still getting a lot of questions from our friends about the venue/hotel rooms... I just send everyone back to the website =)

And yes, I did mine through WW... I kept it very basic, but it's still pretty

You can create one on weddingwire, but it will be hosted by weddingwire. I.e.

    Mine is

    Weddingwire.com/trigg

If you want a DOMAIN name like emily, you will have to purchase it from a 3rd party and code your own website, vs using templates sites like this one.

It's a great way to keep your wedding guests informed, and give them your registry information without having the stigma of putting this on your invitation, also it can be used for RSVPs.

Our website will have the RSVP widget and an FAQ page with the address and time of the ceremony and basic information we don't want the guests to have to ask us directly -- food, attire, dancing, the RSVP deadline, a request to refrain from taking pictures during the ceremony, a scanned copy of the program, where to park, where to go to see the livestream. The backs of the programs will also direct guests with questions to the website, so hopefully everyone will think to flip them over.
